IBM R51 Graphics Issues

Hi there,

I'm having some issues using the new Fedora 11 (Leonidas) on an IBM R51 laptop.

I can boot the install DVD - install the system and create the user account and all seems well.

When I try to use certain programs the video goes kablooey.

Battle for Wesnoth, Videolan, a flash based graphics or a Java bases game and the screen goes all off kilter.

A kernel loops error came up and I sent it in. It looks like:

Any suggestions?

Is it possible to run this in VESA mode and if so how do I modify the GRUB lines?

You can try adding nomodeset as a kernel append. This may fix it, it may not...

Just to be sure, I modified my menu.lst as follows:

initrd /initrd-2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i586.img nomodeset

Which resulted in no change.

The known issues mentions setting an Option in xorg.conf. So I created it and added the option and nothing changed.

It almost acts like a "motion" issue except gnu chess runs flawlessly. Even in 3d mode.

I could almost claim that it's a plugin issue because of flash or Java but Wesnoth doesn't use a browser plugin.

Just weird.

Hopefully the kernel loops people can figure it out. Until then I'm reverting back to Fedora 9 so I can get some work done.

Fedora 11 seems like a nice system. The new filesystem results in the system seeming to be a lot snappier and the one location where I had wi-fi dropouts stopped having them. But without a stable graphics system I'm going to have to punt for now.

Ok, I'm loving this one.

Just before I was going to download 9 and revert and having nothing to lose I tried this.

Click on System, Preferences, Desktop Effects, and then selecting:

Enable Desktop Effects and checking on:

Windows Wobble When Moved and then just for grins runnng Wesnoth again and it displayed properly!

Not sure why but flash and Java based things are displaying correctly as well.

Go Figure.

Thanks for that. My laptop is an IBM R51 as well. I upgraded with 'preupgrade' and everything went off smoothly, except for the issues I had here

Enabling desktop effects did the trick for me as well.
