What is "OpenGL: VBO and PBO" and how do i get it?

i was trying to run MAME (and emulator for arcade games) and MESS (an emulator for a collection of old school console systems) and for both i got the following error

    Code:
    OpenGL: VBO not supported
    OpenGL: PBO not supported
what is that, and how do i get it?

Probably means your video card is too old to support those OpenGL functions.

What graphics card and driver are you using? Post the output of glxinfo.

it shouldn't be that my video card is too old, it plays fine on the windows side.

i did the glxinfo like you said. and this is what i got

    direct rendering: No
here is one problem .either your 3d card dose not support it or it is not turned on OR there is no 3d driver installed for it .Whatever it is ?
WHAT is the 3d card ?
even MY VERY old card has this
    Code:
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
    server glx version string: 1.4
    and is using openGL 1.4
you are using "server glx version string: 1.2"
    OpenSUSE 13.2-64bit & Scientific Linux 6.6-64bit ( fedora 4 to 11) and 20 on KVM

i'm still kind of new with linux, so i'm not sure how to check the card or anything like that, and i'm not sure how to turn that on, or where to get an update or anything like that.

anyway, i looked in device manager on the windows side to try to find the 3d card, and i'm not sure if this is it, but it was listed under display adapters, and nothing else seemed like it would be the 3d card. anyway, it said my display adapter was "ATI Radeon Xpress Series"

i'm pretty sure my card can support it, because mame and mess both work when i run them on my windows partition. so it's probably a driver issue on the fedora side. i just don't know what i'm looking for in order to update it.

ATI cards are VERY well known NOT TO SUPPORT opengl 2 , or for that matter 1.4 or 1.2 very well
you might not be able to get those programs running

can you post the output of this command
Type it into the terminal ( or copy/paste)
    Code:
    lspci | grep VGA
    i get this
    " 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] (rev b2) "

also look at the ATI driver install help page
" Howto for fglrx (Ati driver) and Compiz-fusion "

I had all kinds of problems getting various flavours of Linux to work properly with that card in my Dell Inspiron 1501, i don't think it supports OpenGL very well at all as mentionned above.

For MAME, I think those are advanced graphic options anyways, I seem to remember that you can run it in some kind of 'basic' mode. Perhaps the MAME forums may be able to help for that.
