    Talking Fedora 7 Moonshadow ppc PS3 ok!

    Fedora 7 updated with kernel 2.6.22-rc4 (no dirty):

    Working:

    - samba
    - Pidgin
    - aMsn
    - Youtube
    - h264/AAC
    - Divx
    - Mp3
    - Thunderbird
    - wireless
    - mms/sd
    - IPtables
    - HugeTLB
    - ps3 advanced options (pagetable)

    That's cool, but can you tell me what guide you used to install Fedora in the first place?

    I tried to follow http://robertwrose.com/2007/05/insta...-7-on-ps3.html with two exceptions:
    1) I used the official Fedora 7 PPC DVD rather than the boot.iso
    2) My PS3 complains that http://david.woodhou.se/otheros.bld is broken and refuses to install it. So I used the premade bootloader image from here instead: http://ozlabs.org/~jk/projects/petitboot/

    The system boots, I get petitboot on the screen, but when I select linux64 and press return the menu just comes back. The console mentions a segfault, but no further explanation.

    Tips / hints / better guide?

    If you want, at the end, to have some like this:

    Fedora 7

    [MICRO-QUICKGUIDE]

    - Download otheros (funtional F7)

    - Open Downloaded Fedora DVD iso, and insert otheros folders like this:

    /PS3
    /SRPMS

    Burn DVD, LABEL "FEDORA", for example with nero, insert DVD burned into ps3.
    Reboot with XMB Sony, and install other OS. Reboot and do not nothing until you see anaconda installer, then F12.

    [/MICRO-QUICKGUIDE]

    Hope it helps you.

    akentab,
    this is cool, I have a couple of questions:

    are you able to get 5.1 out of the SPDIF output of the PS3?
    (you can test this with speaker-test -c 6)

    Also which version of ALSA is being used?
    (type aplay -l, and note version number).

    i'm battling 5.1 on the ps3 right now...

    TIA
    GT

    [root@st3ph ~]# speaker-test -c 6

    speaker-test 1.0.14rc2

    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_BE, 6 channels
    Using 16 octaves of pink noise
    Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
    Buffer size range from 4096 to 8192
    Period size range from 256 to 256
    Using max buffer size 8192
    Periods = 4
    was set period_size = 256
    was set buffer_size = 8192
    0 - Front Left
    4 - Center
    1 - Front Right

    I get the same result using the Optical audio out -- only the two front speakers working on my 5.1 system.

    Thanks for posting the "micro guide" -- the F12 key suggestion helped because I could not see the whole screen during install.

    Also, I initially had problems using the otheros.bld downloaded from woohou.se and used the one linked in your guide. I did not make any modification to the Fedora 7 DVD iso (adding the SRPMS folder), though. Install was trouble-free other than not being able to see the whole screen.

    Some notes about my install (geared mostly towards running games / emulators):

    I selected "Software Development" during install, and left the Office and Server options unchecked.

    I set SELinux to disabled thinking it might affect performance (?).

    Unchecked SSH on the Firewall so all ports closed.

    192 updates were found after install -- that took a while but no had problems with the update.

    I changed my resolution to 576p to minimize scaling in emulators for better frame rates:
    Code:
    $  su
    <password>
    $  nano /etc/yaboot.conf
    Changed this line from this:
    Code:
    append="rhgb quiet"
    To this (where 135 is the ps3videomode number used):
    Code:
    append="video=ps3fb:mode:135 rhgb quiet"
    I found a useful "personal setup guide" regarding Services in Fedora 7:
    http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-services-f7.html

    I disabled the following services:

    • anacron
    • atd
    • avahi-daemon
    • bluetooth
    • cpuspeed
    • cups
    • hidd
    • hplip
    • ip6tables
    • iprinit
    • iprdump
    • iprupdate
    • isdn
    • mcstrans
    • mdmonitor
    • nfslock
    • pcscd
    • restorecond
    • rpcbind
    • rpcgssd
    • rpcimapd
    • sendmail
    • setroubleshoot
    • smartd
    • sshd
    • yum-updatesd

    (all disabled in Runlevels 3 and 5, except gdm is enabled in 3 and not 5)

    I added the Livna and Dribble repos in this way:

    Livna - go to http://rpm.livna.org/rlowiki/MyStartingPage
    Click on Fedora 7 repository RPM and install...

    Dribble (http://www.dribble.org.uk)
    Code:
    $  rpm -ivh http://dribble.org.uk/repo/dribble-release-5-3.noarch.rpm
    I read somewhere that I shouldn't use Livna AND FreshRPMs because of compatibility issues, so I left it at that.

    I installed swfdec and the mozilla plugin from the above repos and flash video on Youtube works now. I was never able to get the latest swfdec installed when using YDL 5.0.x. Nice!

    I found and installed the following emulators from the above repos:
    fceu / gfceu (NES Emulator and Frontend)
    Nestopia (NES Emulator, no frontend needed)
    snes9x / snes9xexpress (SNES Emulator and Frontend) *
    Vice (C-64 & C-128 Emulator, no Frontend needed)
    euae (Amiga Emulator, no Frontend needed)
    sdlmame / qmc2 (Arcade game emulator and Frontend) ***
    dosbox (DOS Emulator, works with many DOS games)
    qemu (processor Emulator, using for DOS / Windows 98 games, faster than DOSBox) **
    stella (Atari 2600 Emulator, no Frontend needed)

    * snes9x was not found in the repos I installed -- I used an earlier verion 1.43 from an old FC RPM. The newer 1.5 version I found in an FC6 RPM broke compatibility with the front end snes9express by changing the command line option joymap to joydev (???).

    ** qemu can be re-built from source to support adlib sound hardware so that sound will work in DOS games. Duke Nukem 3D framerate is about 10-20 frames / second depending on location in the game, max screen size / high detail / 320x200.

    *** With the exception of some more recent games emulated in sdlmame, most run at full speed, full screen. Setup was a little troublesome for both sdlmame and qmc2 compared to the other emulators.

    I would be happy to post my config files (dosbox.cfg, mame.ini, etc) files for any of these if requested.

    I am using a Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2 in the emulators instead of the PS3 gamepad -- it is wireless without using bluetooth and works very well. I would prefer to get an arcade style controller, though. I tried an XBox arcade style controller using a hacked USB cable adapter, but the joystick wouldn't work.

    The xpad driver is loaded already in Fedora 7, it shows up when I plug it in and type:

    Code:
    $  dmesg
    But when I say:

    Code:
    $  cat /dev/input/js0
    I don't get anything when I move the stick, but I get gibberish when I press the buttons (gibberish is good in this case). Maybe the version of the xpad driver in the kernel version I have doesn't support it completely? I have kernel 2.6.21-1.3228 (I haven't tried updating it -- afraid I'll break something -- I'm a Linux newbie!)

    Remaining issues:
    * My system won't shut down completely, it just sits there after stopping all the services, have to hard reset

    * My USB Hard drive and 4GB CF card are not detected immediately on bootup, I have to remove and plug in again before they automount. Thought it might be one of the services I disabled but I tried turning ones I thought might possibly be related back on and it didn't help. I did found out that ConsoleKit has to be running for them to be detected at all.

    * I haven't tried installing the Sun Java plugin for Firefox yet -- have done this before in YDL. Is the process the same?
    EDIT: Process used in YDL didn't work for me -- use this instead: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=163332

    If you go back to the Game OS and use the Install Other OS function again you can overwrite / replace the previous bootloader (otheros.bld) in flash memory, if that's what you mean.

    I don't see why you wouldn't have sound using the av-out, but I am using optical so I can't say from personal experience.

    I'm now trying to install fedora 7 and I use the bootloader from http://www.micromercio.com/central/m...eros_fixed.rar.
    I installed the otheros and I start otheros. Then I come in petitboot but I can't select 480i. How do I solve this?

    Doesn't petitboot load at 480i by default?

    Or are you trying to get the installer to run at 480i? I believe it defaults to 800x600 and you will only see the center portion of the installer window. The F12 key will get you past most prompts during installation. (EDIT: Looks like the installer runs at 720x480 with a black border so you only see 640x400)

    Also, I don't think the resolution is passed from what you set in petitboot to the installer (based on what I read here):

    http://robertwrose.com/2007/05/insta...-7-on-ps3.html
    (note: don't use the otheros.bld file linked in this blog entry -- the one you linked is correct)

    I'm using the DVD of fedora 7 that was this month included in Linux Magazine issue 91. Can this have something to do with that I always come into the screen where you can choose between "0-save, 1-720p, 2-720i, 3-1080p, del-Game-OS". Can it be that it doesn't works with this DVD.

    ps. it is compatible with PPC

    The magazine comes with the PPC version of Fedora 7 ? I thought they normally included an x86 version.

    The (correct) DVD should show up and you select Linux64, then proceed with installation. I think the selection you are referring to (0, 1, 2, 3, del) in petitboot only changes the resolution in boot loader and thats all -- it has nothing to do with the graphic mode of the installer or the actual installation once you have it installed.

    in the magazine stands i386, PPC and x86
    but if thats true that it is only the x86 version than I'll have to wait until next month for requesting a DVD

    In my area we only get a few Linux mags in the bookstores that generally only include x86 Linux DVDs. -- that is great if you can get a mag with a Fedora 7 PPC DVD included.

    Does the DVD not show up at all on the petitboot screen?
