    Black screen

    Hello,

I have recently installed Fedora 23. Installation went smoothly till the login screen appeared. I logged on and got blank screen. I presume it might be connected with my graphic Card - GTX750 Ti. Is there any way to get to the terminal and install necessary drivers?

Does selecting the rescue kernel at boot work?

    Re: Black screen

That is strange. Yesterday I tried regular and rescue kernels and none of them worked. Today, after your post, I tried to run the rescue kernel and surprisingly I was able to log on. Then the system installed updates and rebooted and I cannot login again (blank screen). Maybe the reason is different than graphic card.

    Re: Black screen

Thanks for that info. The problem at the moment is I cannot do anything because I have a black screen again.

    Re: Black screen

You could have a look at this thread which is about the same card you mention in post #1
    http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=298027
The thread is from 2014 but looks relevant to me but you would still have to check everything out to factor in any later developments. If you boot up into text mode you may be able to get the appropriate drivers and set it up.

    Re: Black screen

Adding 3 at the end of kernel line doesn't get me to the text mode. Fedora boots in niemal mode. Then login screens appears and after log on black with still pointer.

That's very unusual. Perhaps you could write the exact steps you took. I can't remember when adding 3 to the kernel line has failed to get me to text mode. You need to hit cntrl+X or one of the function keys - grub tells you which one - after you add the 3, rather than hit the enter key. Maybe that was the problem.

    Re: Black screen

Link 307049 given above also discusses your specific graphics card. Can you still get to the graphical interface using the rescue kernel? The rescue kernel uses either the VESA driver or the fbdev driver and should still work, since it doesn't use the nouveau nvidia driver., which apparently is causing the problem.

    Re: Black screen

Apparently the video setup during boot is now more complex than it used to be ... On my machine, booting with the rescue kernel and the normal kernel showed no difference with the video info shown by lspci, glxinfo, xvinfo, and lsmod - so my advice in the previous post is obsolete. A boot parameter you might try, if you still want to get to the graphic interface to try to fix things, is: nouveau.blacklist="yes" - maybe that will force a fall back driver to be loaded during boot.

Have you tried installing in Basic Graphics Mode?
64-bit Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.2 on an Asus M2N68-AM PLUS motherboard, with AMD Phenom 9600 Quad and 4 GB RAM.

32-bit Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3 on Dell Inspiron 530S with 1GB RAM.

    Re: Black screen

Correction: the proper syntax of the boot parameter is: modprobe.blacklist=nouveau. I ran this on F23 and it worked as expected: lsmod shows that nouveau is not loaded (as it normally is), but the graphical desktop works more or less normally, with minor differences. Examining the /etc/modprobe.d directory shows no permanent changes, as apparently it would if the boot parameter had been supplied at install time.

    Re: Black screen

Thanks for that info dswaner. Another kernel line parameter which may be worth a try is:
    Code:
    nouveau.noaccel=1
This has worked when the card locked up randomly and was a real nuisance.

    Re: Black screen

Another entry to the kernel line worth a try is nomodeset
This sometimes keeps it from going into framebuffer. Do you see some things in a larger size type before it goes dark? This is when you add 3 to the kernel line.

I've sometimes found that it will start to boot, then, if there is some sort of video problem, it will go blank--what would happen on a normal boot (in text mode) is that this is the time it switches over to framebuffer mode, which can be problematic if the video card doesn't work properly.

    Re: Black screen

Finally I've managed to run Fedora in text mode. It seems that I put 3 in the wrong place. Then I was able to install RPM Fusion free and nonfree repositories:

    Code:
    su -c 'dnf install http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm'
    and then nVidia driver:

    Code:
    dnf install akmod-nvidia "kernel-devel-uname-r == $(uname -r)"
    dnf update -y
    Everything looks ok so far.

Thank you all for your time and commitment.
