Re: Alpha, beta and Final - TC & RC images

Good news, it now boots on my laptop! (Gnome Live DVD.)
It does have mouse glitches on Xorg and severe whole screen glitches on Wayland (intermittently the picture gets shifted to the right and the lower half of the screen shows a blue overlayed haze).
In dmesg the following gets logged*:
    Code:
    drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO
drm:intel_pch_fifo_underrun_irq_handler] *ERROR* PCH transcoder A FIFO underrun
    * I copied these from some the web but I'm fairly sure these were the ones I saw.
(At least I think I got them right before but closed this tab so had to type it in again but can't verify it because I shutdown the machine).

Re: Alpha, beta and Final - TC & RC images

Is this still a good topic for feedback?
Anyway I tried the final beta and here are my conclusions:

    - Live DVD Workstation and installation:
-- Performance is better with just 1024 MB RAM (Annaconda had some hiccups but I could complete the installation from the live session). There still seems to be a problem with Gnome-Terminal though (there is no prompt, but I'm beginning to doubt that this is memory related).
-- Password annoyance is fixed. Thanks!
-- It works on all my systems (I now use a USB stick because DVD was unworkable).
On my laptop there are still horrible graphical glitches[1] which seem to be caused by the phantom secondary screen it seems to have (damn you Asus). When the second screen is disabled the trouble ceases (only in X11, in Wayland it doesn't).

    - Gnome-Shell GTK3:
-- Dragging with GtkHeaderBar is greatly improved (now one can click and hold anywhere on the bar to move a window around, even on buttons).
-- Click hell affecting GtkHeaderBar and popovermenus is not fixed (and with the improved dragging as mentioned above a fix seems far far away).

    - Gnome-Shell wayland
    -- No tearing, yeay!
-- Unfortunately there are still major usability problems like cut and paste (heavily depends on toolkit and even individual programs it appears), displaced windows and menus and for some reason the global Gnome Application Menu is sometimes not recognized (e.g. Gedit and Rhythmbox).

I still need to install it to a physical system but I first need to find some time and HDD space.
To conclude I feel this release will be one of rock-solid proportions.

    [1] Asus N53SV graphical glitches.
    - History (F21)
This laptop has 2 GPUs (but I do not use the discrete nvidia one) and has been causing a bit of a headage for some time.
The problem seems to be caused by a phantom screen that is producing the following symptoms:
-- When plugging in a screen to the VGA at boot (did not test the HDMI) the firmware seems to disable the laptop screen and booting might halt.
-- ACPI reports two backlights and since F21 (and maybe also F20) systemd tries to restore the wrong one or at least fails somewhere in the process because the backlight is at 100% every boot.

The trouble is minor because I just don't insert a VGA cable at boot and set some sane backlight value at boot through a script.

In the display menu of gnome-control-center there is only one display (the laptop panel) unless a VGA cable is attached.
    Code:
    $ ls -la /sys/class/backlight/
    totaal 0

    - Present (F22)
For some reason Gnome-Shell 3.16 and/or i915 from kernel 4.0 detects the phantom screen and turns it on. This seems to be causing intermittent graphical glitches in Gnome-Shell (mouse ghosting and alike) and severe graphical glitches on Wayland (the whole screen gets shifted to the right and in the middle of the screen there is a horizontal cutoff downwards. To me it sounds like something screen buffer related).
Turning the second screen off in X11 (via Gnome-Shell) corrects this but in Wayland it doesn't (maybe GDM still uses the second screen IDK).

The following commands were executed on a glitching Gnome-Shell X11 session (without a cable connected to VGA or another display port).
    Code:
    $ ls -la /sys/class/backlight/
    total 0
    drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 0 Apr 23 12:28 .

Re: Alpha, beta and Final - TC & RC images

There are some omissions that bother me with RC3
Nautilus option to include the [x] Include a delete command for nautilus
    is missing.

    PulseAudio Option

In a room full of current F20,21,22 LInux versions, because a recent update (Feb2015) update has disabled the front earphone jack, these people have to buy extension cords and plug the headphones into the rear of the desktop computer in order to hear sound.

    Anaconda
has a design bug that causes a problem. If you have multiple spinning disks, anaconda has to scan each disk to determine the free space therein. This delay can take up to 2 minutes (5 disks 6 partitions per disk need to be scanned). If you start with the spokes before the analysis is completed, you will get the message "Pane is Dead"
If you wait for the disk led from your computer, to stop blinking, (which implies the scan has completed), anaconda reacts ok. Its fine for the majority of people, but not for others with more than one or two disks.

If you have several disks, and you choose to autoconfigure Fedora 2x and then let you manually remove it to replace it with a swap file resident on another disk, you get a local swap file , whether you like it or not. I have a SSD and some spinning disks. I want my ~/Download and /swap to not be on the SSD. Let me deal with relocating /swap.

I have ideas how to solve this issue. I will try to present some ideas. If front headphone jack can't get fixed, why are we saying Fedora22 is ready to go? It is for many in a library, a crowded room, a deliverable for all Fedora versions. By the way, Same pulseaudio bug hit SUSE13.2, Centos, and all the Fedora Remixes.

Re: Alpha, beta and Final - TC & RC images

    No problem

    Another release today:

    F22 Final Test Compose 3

    http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/stage/22_TC3/

I'm still not convinced DNF is ready to replace yum just yet. I find it still as unreliable in TC3.

Apart from that, the TC3 of MATE-Compiz is running well. I've also still got Workstation in VM which has been updating through the various stages via yumex. It is at the same package levels as TC3 plus today's updates.

A little screenshot tour of MATE-Compiz I shared on G+ just now

Re: Alpha, beta and Final - TC & RC images

If I started a month or so ago with a F22 Beta will the updates automatically take me through each beta release, TC and RC or do I have to do something special to update to those?

Final spit and polishes being applied...

I've taken the plunge and installed F22 MATE-Compiz now on my notebook for daily usage. It's been very stable in VM for the past couple of weeks and is running smoothly on the notebook too now.

Edit - the exception being the intel bluetooth 4.0 adaptor which isn't fully functional now. rfkill isn't installed, the bluetooth adaptor is enabled (according to windows). wireless is working fine from the centrino wireless-n 2230. It worked fine in F21 with bluedevil. I've posted on ask fedora, it may be a bug to file as I couldn't find anything on bugzilla relating to it.

Digging further on the system with MATE menu editor I found 'BlueDevil Send File' and 'BlueDevil Wizard'. I managed to pair my phone and send a PDF to it using those. There doesn't seem to be any way to receive a file from the phone though. If I try to send one there is no accept file dialogue so it doesn't transfer. I could really do with the BlueDevil control panel again but can't find the bin file to create a launcher. I've emailed the listed package maintainer for guidance.

    Rave

I too took the plunge with Fedora 22 mate. I forgot how good it is, compared to Gnome. Gnome is dumbed down to suite my mother or my grandparents, who do not do much with it except what we see with some delivered icons. So much was left out when compared to Mate, etc.

Re: Alpha, beta and Final - TC & RC images

Well Rex Deiter kindly informed me the bluedevil applet no longer supports anything other than KDE 5 because it is written for Plasma5. So I'll have to figure something else out. I can of course use a USB cable to the phone but it would have been nice to have bluetooth support still in MATE. Maybe there is another package which will do the job. I'll have to investigate. I wonder if it is possible to port the older F21 version of bluedevil to F22? What I really don't want to do is install GNOME or KDE just to use bluetooth. It would be overkill.

You got me, http://joyreactor.com/post/903151 I am my own grandpa

"A few years ago I met a young widow with a grown-up-daughter. We got married and I got myself a stepdaughter.

Later my father married my stepdaughter. That made my stepdaughter my stepmother. And, my father became my stepson. Also, my wife became mother-in-law of her father-in-law.

Much later, the daughter of my wife, my stepmother, had a son. This boy was my half-brother because he was my father's son. But he was also the son of my wife's daughter which made him my wife's grandson.

That made me the grandfather of my half-brother.

This was nothing until my wife and I had a son. Now the half-sister of my son, my stepmother, is also the grandmother.

This makes my father the brother-in-law of my child, whose stepsister is my father's wife. I am my stepmother's brother-in-law, my wife is her own child's aunt, my son is my father's nephew and I am MY OWN GRANDFATHER."
