Exclamation yum update hangs machine! (X86_64)

I have just installed Fedora Core (well 3 times now).

I choose the "minimum" option, and it installs fine, and reboots ok.

The first command I run is:

yum -y update

And yum downloads loads of files, and then starts to update and install things. All seems well, until it says:

Installing slocate

And then the machine hangs (I can no longer SSH into the box). Existing SSH sessions still run ok, and so when I look in the output of "ps aux" and it shows:

/usr/sbin/useradd -c Network Crash Dump user -r -u 34 -g netdump -s /bin/bash -r -d /var/crash netdump

But I cannot kill this process, (kill -9 does not work).

Eventually, killing the yum process returns control but now yum wont update the rest of the packages it had in its list.

I have read about this elsewhere:

- does anybody have a fix - this has been outstanding for a long time now?

Well, after some fighting, I seem to have gotten through the update!

I did a whole bunch of things, but suspect it was point 1 or 6 below...

yum -y update yum

yum -y update kernel-smp.x86_64

yum -y update shadow-utils

4) disabled the following services (this gets it down to bare minimum (like debian!)):

/sbin/chkconfig netfs off
/sbin/service netfs stop
/sbin/chkconfig pcmcia off
/sbin/service pcmcia stop
/sbin/chkconfig nfslock off
/sbin/service nfslock stop
/sbin/chkconfig nfs off
/sbin/service nfs stop
/sbin/chkconfig isdn off
/sbin/service isdn stop
/sbin/chkconfig autofs off
/sbin/service autofs stop
/sbin/chkconfig portmap off
/sbin/service portmap stop
/sbin/chkconfig bluetooth off
/sbin/service bluetooth stop
/sbin/chkconfig cpuspeed off
/sbin/service cpuspeed stop
/sbin/chkconfig irda off
/sbin/service irda stop
/sbin/chkconfig cups off
/sbin/service cups stop
/sbin/chkconfig sendmail off
/sbin/service sendmail stop
/sbin/service kudzu stop
/sbin/chkconfig kudzu off
/sbin/chkconfig mdmonitor off
/sbin/service mdmonitor stop
/sbin/chkconfig rpcidmapd off
/sbin/service rpcidmapd stop
/sbin/chkconfig rpcsvcgssd off
/sbin/service rpcsvcgssd stop
/sbin/chkconfig haldaemon off
/sbin/service haldaemon stop
/sbin/chkconfig messagebus off
/sbin/service messagebus stop

yum -y remove slocate

yum -y update

*bump* I'm sticking in the same place. I'm going to try and upgrade a little bit at a time. I think it has something to do with the rpm wanting to create a user that already exists. Check this thread.

I think it was:

yum -y update shadow-utils

That updated the password utilities, and ultimately made it work for the rest of the update.

I'm having the same problem, almost.
But it doesn't seem to be any particular package that it hangs on, it just hangs.
I've had this problem before on an FC3 machine, but it only it did it a couple of times.
Yum plays up something wicked on my new A64 machine

According to info on FC5 here>

mlocate has replaced slocate in FC5

Found a recent mlocate rpm here>

Perhaps problems can be solved by removing slocate and using mlocate instead?
