function keys, german character-set

Hallo specialists,

I am using an old text oriented Informix-aplication. Using this program in a console or in the X-term does make a difference when using functions keys.
Also the use of the german characters with the funny points over the letter does lead to different output when running an aplication wheter the source code is written in the X-term-window or on the console.
and printing this different output-files is different when printing with lpr or trough a perl script which combines two files (forground-text and background-graphic) together to one output print.

Wher can I get background information on this subject without having to read lots of books? I have not the time to digg me into that problem, but I am afraid that I will have to spend some time in this complicated subject.
thanks for information
