command lines

do i type the command lines into RUN APPLICATION? the book im reading doesn't say where to type them...

what command lines do you speak of???
they probably need to be typed into a terminal such as gnome-terminal
(you can launch gnome-terminal from "run application")

what commands couldn't be used with the terminal... would konsole work? would any terminal work? thanks alot

Any terminal program should get you a command line where you can enter commands and see the output of the commands. Typically, I only use "Run Application" when I know in advance that the application is graphical and I don't need or want to see any other output. You can also switch to the console (text) by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1. You may need to login, but once you're in, you can issue commands that way as well.
