bitlbee and jabber

Tearing my hair out over this one.

Fedora 16

login to bitlbee and add a jabber account

18:34 <@root> auto_connect = `true'
18:34 <@root> auto_reconnect = `true'
18:34 <@root> nick_format is empty
18:34 <@root> nick_source = `handle'
18:34 <@root> password = `***********' (hidden)
18:34 <@root> tag = `gtalk'
18:34 <@root> username = `[my username]@gmail.com'
18:34 <@root> activity_timeout = `600'
18:34 <@root> port = `5222'
18:34 <@root> priority = `0'
18:34 <@root> proxy = `<local>;<auto>'
18:34 <@root> resource = `BitlBee'
18:34 <@root> resource_select = `activity'
18:34 <@root> server is empty
18:34 <@root> ssl = `false'
18:34 <@root> tls = `try'
18:34 <@root> user_agent = `BitlBee'
18:34 <@root> xmlconsole = `true'
18:34 <@root> away is empty
18:34 <@root> status is empty

When I try to login, I get this:

19:00 <@root> jabber - Logging in: Connecting
19:00 <@root> jabber - Logging in: Connected to server, logging in
19:00 <@root> jabber - Logging in: Converting stream to TLS
19:00 <@root> jabber - Login error: Could not connect to server
19:00 <@root> jabber - Logging in: Signing off..
19:00 <@root> jabber - Logging in: Reconnecting in 135 seconds..

-----xmconsole output------------------
19:00 <xmlconsole> TX: <?xml version='1.0' ?><stream:stream to="gmail.com" xmlns="jabber:client" xmlns:stream="http://etherx.jabber.org/streams"
19:00 <xmlconsole> RX: <stream:features><starttls xmlns="urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:xmpp-tls"><required/></starttls><mechanisms
19:00 <xmlconsole> TX: <starttls xmlns="urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:xmpp-tls"/>
19:00 <xmlconsole> RX: <proceed xmlns="urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:xmpp-tls"/>
I've also compiled bitlbee from source using all 3 TLS libraries and all 3 have the same problem. selinux is disabled and I get the same behavior with or without iptables running. Bitlbee only provides support via IRC and I've been trying to get help for literally weeks to no avail.

Any input appreciated, I'm totally at a loss.
