Install FC3 in free space besides RH9?

Okay, first I apologize if this is a repeated topic. I searched a bit and didn't get my answer..

Say I have a machine with redhat 9 on it, /boot, /, and swap partitions and a chunk of free space..

I want to install FC3 into that free space but before I screw up my main system, I'm testing it on a spare machine..

If I let the FC3 install install a boot loader, it breaks my redhat install.. I manually edit grub.conf, boot and wind up with "kernel panic"..

I've also tried not installing a boot loader and modify the grub.conf from the existing install to no avail.

Surely there is an easy way to do this?

not sure if this could help you at all but this is a thread recently posted that has to do with 'kernel panic'

I think I just caused that by improperly editing grub.conf..

From what I've heard you shouldn't need to edit the grub.conf, anaconda should make both entries on installation..
