Extend sound event time

I have Fedora 14, 64 bit. What I want to do is extend the time that a sound event plays.
Example > I have changed the start up sound to : Initiating start up sequence.
However it only partially plays this : Initiating start up sequ.
I also have the same issue with K3b. It makes me laugh when it fully plays its success file !

Any ideas?
