Question Howto: save "list of installed packages"

how do I save installed packages in a list and restore ...

rpm -qa > installed-software.log
yum install $(cat installed-software.log)

sorting rpm packages by size
rpm -qa --qf '%{SIZE}\t%{NAME}\n' | sort -n

Re: Howto: save "list of installed packages"

Hello, and Welcome to Fedoraforum.org,

This should work just fine.
rpm -qa > installed-software
or in alphabetical order:
rpm -qa|sort > installed-software
Hope this helps,

Also another way if you want to make a kickstart file for installing with or making a livecd..(assuming you have system-config-kickstart installed)

system-config-kickstart --generate current.ks

Fedora 12 Backup installed software

To make the txt with your files:
rpm -qa | sort > /home/[user]/Desktop/installed-software.log
To reinstall everything from the txt:
yum -y install $(cat /home/[user]/Desktop/installed-software.log)
To download all the packages without installing anything(to make a local repository perhaps)
yumdownloader $(cat /home/[user]/Desktop/installed-software.log) --destdir="/home/[user]/Desktop/local_repository"

To restore your configurations too you need to backup the /etc folder and maybe also the user folder. I don't really know because I don't care that much about the configuration files.

Re: Howto: save "list of installed packages"

i have installed yum-plugin-local to keep copies of downloaded/installed packages. The directory is /var/lib/yum/plugin/local. It contains all rpm packages (along-with different versions).

I want to copy only latest packages from that directory. How to do that?
