Installing large or scalable Helvetica fonts.

I am porting an app from IRIX to Fedora Core 6 and apparently need to import some fonts, because the X11 core fonts and Type1 fonts on my system do not satisfy the font specs below, which are loaded into OpenGL. So I have two questions: 1) It appears that IRIX used Type 1 fonts, but the file extensions for Type 1 fonts on my Fedora system are different from those on IRIX (.pfb and .afm instead of .pfa). Can I import the IRIX fonts? 2) Is there a better choice for importing scalable or no-scalable fonts to my Fedora system?
