hi, save the downloaded media writer to your HDD/SSD. Insert a 4GB minimum USB stick. open the folder you saved the media writer to and run it with admin rights.

you should be prompted to choose an ISO to download and which device to write it to as per this screenshot. click on the three dots at the bottom of the list for more options

Re: install via usb -- where is the usb link to dl file onto usb?

you're very confusing and unclear:

'folder you saved the media writer' --

* the file dled? or the installed program?

'4gb' --

on the site, it says 2gb

only have 2gb

---

* where on the site is these exact steps?

Re: install via usb -- where is the usb link to dl file onto usb?

this link is linking to a diff site -- this is confusing, can't tell if the link is updated

i already said --

* after installing the program
* it never opens

this was never solved

---

* it's 2017, why hasn't a single person fixed this basic problem, which is very easy to fix??

Re: install via usb -- where is the usb link to dl file onto usb?

I'm a bit unclear on what you've done so far, but if it helps a few days ago I downloaded fedora-media-writer for windows and installed on a windows 7 computer. The installation went fine, but after I closed the initial run of media writer and went to re-open it, the link to the executable in the windows start menu was aiming at a non-existent "app.exe". In my download, the executable is named mediawriter.exe, and after editing the windows menu shortcut to the correct .exe all was well.

I chose to download my desired live image (xfce) to the windows computer, insert target usb stick, then run fedora media writer using a custom install, allowing me to browse to the downloaded image. After clicking OK a couple minutes later the fedora live usb was ready to use.

* download the ISO
* use etcher.io to "burn" it to your flash drive

Re: install via usb -- where is the usb link to dl file onto usb?

* where's the iso link?

there's a .exe dl link on https://getfedora.org/en/workstation/download/

but as said, after it installs, it never opens when i try to open it (on win10)

--

https://etcher.io/ looks good though

should be on every single site that has a .iso link

like on https://elementary.io/docs/installation

Re: install via usb -- where is the usb link to dl file onto usb?

I followed these steps to install Fedora 25 Xfce on a laptop and using windows to create a live usb to install to the computer from. [EDIT]<-- cruddy grammar

1. Download and install fedora media writer for windows.
2. Visit getfedora.org, then the Spins page, and download the Xfce spin, save on the windows computer
3. Insert a usb stick in the windows computer. It will be completely erased by fedora media writer so don't use one with data you want to save
4. Run fedora media writer (see bug in my earlier post), pick a custom install, verify the usb drive selected, and choose the recently downloaded xfce iso file to put on the usb stick.
5. When done, take the live usb stick to the target laptop computer.
6. Use the laptop boot menu to boot from the usb. You must UEFI boot if you want your installation to UEFI boot. If you're dual-booting with windows, use windows to free up disk space to unallocated for the fedora install. For dual boot, you can (and should) leave secure boot enabled on the computer.
7. Once the xfce live is booted, choose Install to hard disk from the xfce desktop. Run the fedora installation.,

When it's completed, your laptop should boot to Fedora. If dual boot, you should get a grub2 menu with a choice to boot windows available.

It's quite an easy and nice process once you get used to it.

Re: install via usb -- where is the usb link to dl file onto usb?

do you have to dl the .iso

and THEN open the .exe that's BEEN installed

for the .exe program to actually OPEN??

---

ALL other programs opens, so it must be how this program does its 'opening' that is the source of the problem

it's win10, everything is fine but this program

I've never used the fedora media writer. Download an ISO of fedora (I use kororaproject.org/download, but there's nothing wrong with stock) Use etcher.io or similar, like sf.net/projects/win32diskimager/files/ burn the ISO to your USB drive.

Re: install via usb -- where is the usb link to dl file onto usb?

I believe I downloaded Fedora Media Writer from github. It installed like any windows program, and created the (broken) start menu link to start it up.

I notice on a RedHat blog post they provide a link to download a different named Fedora Media Writer, but I didn't myself.

Then I chose to download my desired Fedora spin (Xfce) in advance, saved to a temp directory. If you wish, you can let Fedora Media Writer itself connect to the appropriate mirror site and download the desired Fedora.

Re: install via usb -- where is the usb link to dl file onto usb?

if getting into bios and hotkeys do not work for a laptop

**laptop** = lenovo u310 (none of the reset / bios methods work)

then would an external cd drive with fedora 100% for sure auto-boot?

or would it just boot into the ssd?

**os** = mint 18.1 (completely dysfunctional, crashes and freeze randomly like a min after booting the os)
