F23 Google Drive

Hi,

when you add a google account to online accounts and activate
Files / Documents (don't know what the difference is, maybe someone can share some insights here),
in files under

+ other locations

you can now access your google drive as if it is a local hard drive.

I founds some websites, but none that really explains what you can do with it,
more than up- and downloading files.

https://fedoramagazine.org/test-driv...edora-23-beta/

Does anyone use it?
Can you sync local folders?
Is there a local version of you files?
Do you have other questions?

Ya....

1) Didn't the Fedora team learn anything from SPAMAZONBUNTU?
2) Please tell me there is a way to completely disable this crap?
3) Short of that, I guess I should abandon GNOME all together and go with MATE or something, right?
4) Why did I ever leave UBUNTU since this Google crap is now mandatory and UBUNTU AMAZON is now opt-in?
5) Why is it that user communities seem to be willing to bash one big company into the dirt then turn around and give another big company a pass on integration with similar issues, just because we LIKE said company?

YAYA, I know you don't put in a google account and it doesn't activate. However, I as a linux user should not even have to worry about handing ANY information at all to a big corporation. PIRIOD!

For one thing I am definitely dropping gnome RSN and plan on doing some distro shopping again.

Re: F23 Google Drive

Hi

I am not sure what your complaint is since you seem to have not tried it. This is a completely optional feature in GNOME and if you don't want to use it, then don't. Fedora hasn't done any changes here.

Re: F23 Google Drive

Yep. You have to enter your google drive account info to enable it. It is no different to something like dropbox integration in nautilus.

Re: F23 Google Drive

@ kingsombra: you don't need to add an online account, if you don't want. I find it quite useful and I am happy that it works. However, I could not find documentation.

@ alphacrucis: I think, it only puts data to the online drive? Or is it preparing a local copy too?

You may be right as I haven't tested it yet.

Re: F23 Google Drive

Have just tried it out. It appears in nautilus just as a remote file store, so it looks like you do have to manually move files to/from with no automatic folder sync capability like dropbox provides. I guess it's a step anyway.

Out of curiosity...

You can add Google Drive to Nautilus, and drop files on it for upload?

Currently I access Google Drive through Chrome, dropping files for upload through the browser. Chrome (Google Drive) is synced with Fedora, so I can work on files (through Chrome applications) off line, and when on line again, it will update files in Google Drive.

What's the benefit of Google Drive in Nautilus? Thanks

Re: F23 Google Drive

Okay, so reading up on this, Google Drive support through Gnome 3, there is no off-line syncing.

Best to have Chrome and enable (through Chrome) off-line syncing. It really is nice to be able to open documents, spreadsheets, and work on them (off-line) and have everything saved (and synced) when you are on-line again.

As I have said before, really happy with the combination of F23 Workstation + Google Chrome. Vanilla install and add Chrome

Nice. Which extension is that?

I found google docs offline, but I doubt that is right one... or is it only for google docs?

I access files through Chrome browser. I load Google Drive, through a tab in Chrome.

Google Chrome > Google Drive > Settings (button upper right) > Offline, activate with tick.

Google Drive Offline: Sync Google Docs, Sheets, Slides & Drawings files to this computer so that you can edit offline.

Re: F23 Google Drive

The drive integration of nautilus is also not really working. It is very slow and sometimes it freezes my computer. E.g. when saving a file to it via chrome.

Re: F23 Google Drive

Once you enable to offline thing, how do you access it from nautilus or nemo or whatever?

Also, how do I make it all files, such as PDFs, etc?

---

Also, I'm trying to use it through nautilus and nemo, and it says "timed out when logging in."

What to do?
