Upgrade FC24 64bit to FC25 64bit --> X/windows fails to start

Hello guys,

here's another nugget for you. I've got a Sony (real) Vaio Z , with hardware raid 1 on SSD, which has been working faultlessly since I bought it. Went through several Fedora versions using [fedup] without problems, my last upgrade was to FC24 around August 2016.

Then today I decided to take the plunge to FC25 (as I successfully did in 4 other PC's around the house), but alas, no graphical boot, and no X/windows. (I usually use lxdm / xfce , or lightdm / xfce , i.e. no gnome)

CTRL-ALT-F4 yields the console, which is working fine, and I was able to log in, and pull some logs for the Brains here to check. (telinit 3, with a subsequent telinit 5 yielded no success on X/windows starting)

I got /var/log/messages , which contains a lot of FC24 boot data since Feb 5, I guess it's a good comparison then. I also got /var/log/Xorg.0.log , also an lspci -v , and a dmesg > dmesg.txt
Attaching them here.

I have not taken a deep look into the errors yet, since I am probably going to reinstall FC25 from a USB stick in a FRESH install.

However, I'll give it a few hours and see if anyone here can point me in the right direction with an obvious PEBKAC slapping.

Re: Upgrade FC24 64bit to FC25 64bit --> X/windows fails to start

Update: looking at the Xorg.0.log I see it actually belongs to an old FC24 startup.
I will now delete it, and reboot, and see if a new one gets created at all.

Re: Upgrade FC24 64bit to FC25 64bit --> X/windows fails to start

Quick update, which sorta fixed my issue:

I went to /etc/systemd/system/ and I saw that display-manager.service was linked to
/usr/lib/systemd/system/lightdm.service

I did: rm -f display-manager.service
and then ln -s /usr/lib/systemd/system/lxdm.service display-manager.service

rebooted, and it works with LXDM.

So, now I need to figure out why LightDM is not working. Maybe my custom configuration file !!! (which I always modify to allow tcp connections from outside on port 6000)
And VOILLA !, fixed.
I went into /etc/lightdm/
and I did:
cp lightdm.conf lightdm.conf.OLD
cp lightdm.conf.rpmnew lightdm.conf
Then redid the symlink in /etc/systemd/system/ to display-manager.service

rebooted, and IT WORKS !
so, it was my custom .conf file, which killed it.
SOLVED

Nothing appears wrong in the Xorg.0.log file, but your messages file is rife with lightdm failures, an excerpt:
Code:

Feb 8 15:30:56 bobx systemd: lightdm.service: Unit entered failed state.
Feb 8 15:30:56 bobx systemd: lightdm.service: Failed with result 'start-limit-hit'.
I have no clue as to why. Havn't viewed the other files yet.

Cheers Pablo, I solved it, look at my solution. It was obvious PEBKAC. (EDIT: well, not so obvious)

Sorry, I didn't see your last two posts prior to my response...guess I was too busy looking through those log files when you posted them. Glad you got it resolved.
