Does Linux need Antivirus

I just came across a thread about installing antivirus on Fedora; I was told a long time ago AV wasn't needed on Linux, so has something changed?

Re: Does Linux need Antivirus

If you forward an email that has a virus, how would you feel? Especially since the virus is unable to attack Linux.

Some people install clamav, so that any virus files discovered in an emails that you may have received with a virus and forward, are hopefully removed from the forwarded message.

I am one of the some!

Re: Does Linux need Antivirus

This mean that antivirus on Linux is to protect your friends & NOT to protect you.

Just not run su command & if you like to use WineHQ you should follow my guide (search it in Guides sections in this forum).

Your only real enemy on Linux is rootkit, & this only you can avoid it by either disable scripts (very painful) or by using VPN (good option).

Re: Does Linux need Antivirus

Short answer: No

Long answer: Yes, in order to protect other computers

The Linux maintenance philosophy is different from Windows. If a problem is found in Linux, the problem gets fixed very rapidly. If a problem is found in Windows - usually buggerall is done about it for up to 20 years.

That is why you don't need antivirus on Linux.

There is no such a thing as a perfectly secure system, there is always a way in.
Linux has a very small portion of desktop users, therefore not many viruses are targeting Linux. This doesn't mean that Linux is immune.

Think as a programmer for a second, if you want to infect the most possible computers which platform you would write your virus for? As Linux grows if popularity, you can be sure more programmers will target it. Still the most efficient defense is your common sense, avoid questionable sites and programs.

I always say to my friends there is no such thing as free music or free movies.

I use clamav, I have also installed clamav on a vps server i use to ensure no email traffic is infected with a virus. My 2 cents...

Re: Does Linux need Antivirus

Use clamav if you wish but again clamav is looking for windows viruses, but the most important things to do on linux to keep it secure is to keep the system up to date on a daily basis, use su rarely and wisely and set up a firewall (on fedora it's very easy -- just install firewalld). If you are browsing -- in any OS -- with an outdated browser, you are inviting trouble (drive-by exploits, etc)

Linux is essentially an OS for servers, and well-run servers definitely will filter-out bad stuff like viruses so computers running Windows won't get infected. That is the reason clamav is used on Fedora.

Re: Does Linux need Antivirus

Some of my enemies pretend to be my friends, and they run Windows. So, like the friend that I am, I forward to them the porn that Antikythera sends to me,.
