get compiz working in Fedora 26

I have Fedora 26 on my desktop computer. I want to get compiz working. I like 16 desktops and wobbly windows!

When I look for compiz, I get a blue icon with stars and a magic wand. It says at the bottom 'Compiz start'

A click on this leads to a blank screen and a blinking cursor. All I can do is ctrl alt F3 to get another login terminal, login and force a restart with sudo shutdown -r now

This is not ideal.

If compiz won't work with the basic gnome desktop that comes with the Fedora installation, how can I get say the mate desktop to start by default?

Very grateful for any tips or links!
