Camera connects then disconnects

After the past two years when I use a Nikon D80 and connect the camera via USB a Dialogue box comes up on the first attempt. Within the last couple of months it can take several times for the dialogue to display, as I write this I have tried over 10 times and I keep getting the following message from Dmesg

Quote:

usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

The last line is obviously where it disconnects...
Could it be the wire that I am using is almost broken? The appearance is the same as when I first had it just over two years ago. It would seem strange that it does detect the presence of the camera though which to my mind suggests its not the wire..

Anyone else had this problem and how to resolve it?
