Is /boot/initrd-plymouth.img obsolete?

I dnf system-upgraded my Fedora 24 laptop to 25, and I see this file in /boot:
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 559315 May 11 2016 initrd-plymouth.img
date stamped May 11 2016 which seems old since I've updated and have all these kernels, the newest 4.10.3-200 was built 15 March 2017

and the initrd-plymouth.img belongs to no rpm file:
rpm -qf /boot/initrd-plymouth.img
file /boot/initrd-plymouth.img is not owned by any package
so is this file obsolete and can be deleted or does some other package generate that which explains having no package?

Re: Is /boot/initrd-plymouth.img obsolete?

I'm pretty sure it's not necessary at all. I know in past releases of Fedora I have deleted that file from the /boot directory with no resulting issues. Plus, when doing a "plymouth-set-default-theme" and using the "--rebuild-initrd" option, no new initrd-plymouth.img file was created.

It puts itself into the current version kernel initramfs image file. I'm currently seeing "-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 210009 Aug 14 2016 initrd-plymouth.img" on my F25 desktop system, which hasn't had a clean fresh install since I can't remember when. So I don't know what generated that file. Perhaps a major version upgrade to plymouth itself (?).

OK... looking further. the .img file is generated by a combination of these three script files (from plymouth-scripts package)

Exactly what would trigger any of them to be called other than the "--rebuild-initrd" option to the set theme command I don't know.
