F21 \ Re-Enabling Nouveau

Hi All;

Not super new to Linux; but new to the RHEL/Fedora/CentOS side;

Was recently shipped a hard disk with a UEFI Fedora 21 install.
Booting straight from grub resulted in a "oh no, something went wrong" style splash.

I was able to boot into it on run level 3; and found that it had proprietary nvidia drivers installed. I had a laptop with an nvidia card actually in it; however it still wasn't able to boot once tried from there.

Following the best instructions I could find I ran
Code:
dnf remove xorg-x11-drv-nvidia
after backing up the entire /etc/X11/ dir;

The removal killed off 5 packages;
Code:
kmod-nvidia-4.0.8-200.fc21.x86_64.x86_64 1:352.21-1.fc21.3
kmod-nvidia-4.1.13-100.fc21.x86_64.x86_64 1:358.16-1.fc21
kmod-nvidia-4.1.5-100.fc21.x86_64.x86_64 1:352.30-2.fc21.3
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia.x86_64 1:358.16-1.fc21
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64 1:358.16-1.fc21
After rebooting the machine fired up to to the desktop without any args; however it's super unstable, ssh sessions are difficult in the extreme and even booting up without X I get endless streams of warnings, dumps and CPU lockups.
I can see that killing the drivers has changed my boot params (previously had blacklist nouveau amongst other args)

I have full access to the file system (mounted on another machine); and can view \var\log\ and see that various bits aren't happy.
I can also see my full boot config is currently
Code:
menuentry 'Fedora, with Linux 3.19.2-201.fc21.x86_64' --class fedora --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os --unrestricted $menuentry_id_option 'gnulinux-3.19.2-201.fc21.x86_64-advanced-3697040f-2715-4560-bd7f-00dd54ec01b0' {
	set gfxpayload=text
	insmod gzio
...
	linuxefi /vmlinuz-3.19.2-201.fc21.x86_64 root=UUID=3697040f-2715-4560-bd7f-00dd54ec01b0 ro vconsole.font=latarcyrheb-sun16  rhgb quiet
	initrdefi /initramfs-3.19.2-201.fc21.x86_64.img
So no more blacklist=nouveau etc; however I'm finding it difficult to find instructions on setting fedora back to base (plymouth + noveau ?) configs;
Is anybody able to shed any light on suggested configs ?

Can post current xorg.conf / logs etc if required.
Thanks!

Re: F21 \ Re-Enabling Nouveau

I think the first thing you should try is making a backup copy of the /boot/iniramfs-3.19.2-201.fc21.x86_64.img file and then run the "dracut" command (as root user) to rebuild it.

The initramfs image files contain a basic snapshot of the installation to get the system booting, so will still contain the Nvidia kernel module and X11 drivers and the blacklisting of Nouveau. It needs to be rebuilt to reflect the new system configuration.

Re: F21 \ Re-Enabling Nouveau

Check the machines current kernel command line for any leftover nvidia/nouveau bits:
Code:
cat /proc/cmdline
Check the current video driver modules:
Code:
lsmod | egrep "nouveau|nvidia"
lspci -k | grep -A5 VGA
And plus 1 for rebuilding the initramfs file, as the nvidia driver probably got "baked into" the current kernel initramfs file.
