I'm running F20 ... When I log into the Cinnamon desktop from startup, it loads a black screen, I can see the mouse cursor and it moves about but I'm unable to do anything; it doesn't matter if I let it sit for a while, it never finishes loading the Desktop. Alt-F2 doesn't work, and there's no way to log out so the only solution I have (so far) is to restart the system.

As near as I can recall, the problem started about 3 weeks ago; I'm not aware of any Cinnamon updates at the time. When I first installed it some months back, I probably only did "yum install cinnamon*" and I've been using it exclusively since then, but I have been forced to return to Gnome while I troubleshoot this in my infinite spare time.

This morning, after some reading, I did "yum groupinstall "Cinnamon Desktop"" and additional packages were installed, but that didn't change anything: I restarted my system but was unable to log directly into Cinnamon.

The biggest breakthrough after the "yum groupinstall": I found that, if I first logged into Gnome, then loggged out, I can log into the Cinnamon desktop. I haven't left the system running long enough to determine if it's stable; however, I'm suspicious because, when I first discovered this this morning, it locked up while loading apps and I was forced to reboot. It may have been that I was overzealous, or not.

I renamed the .cinnamon under my Home directory and that didn't change anything either, and when I logged into Gnome, logged out and logged into Cinnamon, it showed the default desktop.

Looking for suggestions or directions ... thanks!

Post some logs and hardware + graphics driver info!

Re: Cinnamon guide (replacement for gnome-shell)

@jbkt23 I have tested F20 live, and sadly, the one thing I need for my netbook is brightness control, and while it worked in F19, it is not so in F20. A bugzilla entry has been posted.

I checked my Netbook and Mint16 with Cinamon has brightness working and now, I am able to read the netbook without having to dim the room lights.

Re: Cinnamon guide (replacement for gnome-shell)

I thought you didn't have time to maintain any more packages?

That being said, I certainly don't at the moment. I'm installing my new Kitchen.

I'll add cinnamon to my guide and keep an eye on tweaks to make it work betterer until it becomes an official package.

Do you want a mirror or should I just merge it into my own repo?
