Not too sure why dnf update dnf doesnt update is packages?

Hi,

When I was on ebay, firefox alerted me the flash plugin was not up to date, when I run dnf up dnf I get this:

[root@localhost home]# dnf update dnf
Last metadata expiration check: 2:26:29 ago on Tue May 16 18:04:51 2017.
Dependencies resolved.
Nothing to do.
Complete!
[root@localhost home]#

I have had this before when I run that command and yet it had been months since I last updated the system, how is this possible? I believe flash plugin was either direct from source or from the non-free repo place. I was sure the free fusion repo was in the file which you update for source lists, yet how is this possibly up to date, I mean the computer doesn't take forever to start up like it was literally updating the moment it was turned on, indeed, 4 minutes past 6 today???

Thanks in advance,

oh and in addition to the top, when i did dnf update, it only updated flash and chrome. As it happens chrome messed up royally on a website last week, it let adverts pop up in new windows, i couldn't close any of them and resorted in going to system monitor to close the program by force!

Try to run:

Code:
sudo dnf clean metadata
sudo dnf upgrade --refresh

You can check where you got it with:

Code:
[root@frodo ~]# dnf list flash*
Last metadata expiration check: 3:09:28 ago on Tue May 16 13:05:42 2017.
Installed Packages
flash-plugin.x86_64 25.0.0.171-release @adobe-linux-x86_64
Available Packages
flash-player-ppapi.x86_64 25.0.0.171-release adobe-linux-x86_64
flashrom.x86_64 0.9.9-2.fc25 updates
[root@frodo ~]#
I believe you will find that (like me) you did not get it from the Fedora or RPMFusion repos.

You can update in firefox by tools > Addons > "gearcog icon" and select "check for updates" dropdown

Also " dnf update dnf " only checks that dnf is up to date. Use " dnf upgrade " to check everything from your defined repos.

Check if you have flash plugin repo installed.

Code:
$ sudo dnf repolist
If not go to adobe site and follow the instructions there.

The problem is that 'dnf update dnf' is literally telling dnf to update the dnf package and its dependencies. But your dnf was up-to-date so it reports there's nothing to do. So what you want is to try a general update:
Quote:
dnf update
or to be specific
Quote:
dnf update flash-plugin

I have done this, it cleaned 68 files and then updated some rpm fusion packages, though has not updated what I would have thought it would update ie hundreds of MBs when I havnt updated for a while. What did the command do exactly?

Anyway I am still on the original query in that dnf doesnt update everything:

[root@localhost home]# dnf update dnf
Last metadata expiration check: 0:04:52 ago on Wed May 24 16:11:31 2017.
Dependencies resolved.
Nothing to do.
Complete!
[root@localhost home]# dnf update
Last metadata expiration check: 0:04:59 ago on Wed May 24 16:11:31 2017.
Dependencies resolved.
Nothing to do.
Complete!

Re: Not too sure why dnf update dnf doesnt update is packages?

I am suspecting the repositories for fedora itself are not on here, when I look in yum extender program, it does indeed list fedora 23 updates but is only showing one item to update which is 34kb lol. How do I check what repositories it is looking at?

Are they all there?

[root@localhost home]# dnf repolist
Last metadata expiration check: 0:29:59 ago on Wed May 24 16:11:31 2017.
repo id repo name status
adobe-linux-x86_64 Adobe Systems Incorporated 3

google-chrome google-chrome 3
rpmfusion-free RPM Fusion for Fedora 23 - Free 505
rpmfusion-free-updates RPM Fusion for Fedora 23 - Free - Updates 380
rpmfusion-nonfree RPM Fusion for Fedora 23 - Nonfree 194

I think I have found out why, I am on fedora 23 and it has reached end of life. Why didnt it warn me to upgrade then?

Re: Not too sure why dnf update dnf doesnt update is packages?

you can use dnf system upgrade from 23 onwards. before you do, backup any important files incase the upgrade fails.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DNF_system_upgrade

alternative is a clean install of course.
