COPR version has 64bit float point precision for image processing.

sounds good. however, what are the specific benefits of 64-bit float point precision with regards image editing though? because there is very little in CAD.

the older Fedora repo version seemingly works fine 'as is' for me and my simple demands of GIMP. I'm not processing loads of hi-res images though.

Looks exiting but I can't find a good feature list for 3.10.
This ended up on top of my web search, is very detailed and touches a lot of different features but is unfortunately from late 2012.
The GIMP roadmap is more up to date but also harder to grasp.

Very useful in astronomy world.

When you apply various image processing filters then you get rounding errors. These can accumulate a lot when multiple filters are applied. 64bit floating point precision means that the results of stacking filters like that are far more accurate.

Thanks alphacrucis. That makes sense now. So sharper processing at greater image depth and less blurring hence the astronomy benefits.

Gimp have recently announced dev release 2.9.2.

https://www.gimp.org/news/2015/11/27...-9-2-released/

As far as I know, there is no fedora copr for it yet.

Re: Gimp 2.9.1 available for fedora 21 via copr

I too was hoping to get GIMP 2.9.* in the hope they have a Color>Components>Decompose selection for Lch (if that is even still the menu selection and/or a category anymore.).

HSV color space, while having a certain intuative side to it, is actually not very good. The Lch color space based off LAB is far better in the way it matches to the Munsell notions (strong useful notions of color). If decomposition is still allowed in 2.9, and one can decompose along the lines of “c” in Lch mode, then this is a very much wanted feature by me. Does anyone know if 2.9 does that??

Also, is it safe to still get the 2.9.1 build listed above – will it work, within reason, on Fedora 23 or is it probably best to avoid it for now?

The maintainer of Gimp in Fedora repository packaged 2.9.2 last month.

I'm looking forward to being able to work directly with 16-bit (per channel) FITSs and TIFFs and that high precision engine. I'm mostly interested as I do some astrophotography.
