Smile I finally did it ...

... installed F17 to bare metal, that is. The backstory is long and sordid, but the highpoints are: A reasonably new laptop, (HP Pavilion dv7 6c80us) and a newish SSD happened to be in the same place at the same time, along with the F17 LiveCD.

From there, it was inevitable.

So far, it's been just about what I expected. Although the prompt at install to go fetch the better firmware was a nice change of pace from Anaconda's usual intrasigence. As usual, I slapped it upside da haid and did not allow any sort of LVM silliness to insert itself into the process.

About half the gnome-shell-extensions in the repo don't work, but I expected that, too. It's still pretty much of a crap-shoot where those things are concerned.

The most appearant problems so far have been some weirdness in the System Settings dialogs, several crashes and ABRTs in Gnome-terminal, and the following malfunction of the playskool icons in the applications overview.

But I assume that's going to be fixable with some fiddling around in the theme css files.

I will give it this: If you haven't tried F16/17 on an SSD in a reasonably quick modern machine, you'll certainly be pleasantly surprised when you do.

Although my usual bracket of excuses to get up and go get coffee are obviously going to have to be re-negotiated. <....>

Re: I finally did it ...

I noticed that just about every Gnome 3 shell theme in the Fedora repo had the broken Playskool icons in the overview. I believe I found one, zukitwo, that wasn't completely messed up.

My personal favourite icon theme is hydroxygen - downloaded from gnome-look.org.

Got a screenshot on that one?

Thanks!

It's a composited shot from 4 (I think. Don't really remember now.) consecutive exposures shot off of a tripod at the Ft Towson 4th of July fireworks a few years ago.

Gee Dan.. You know I don't run Gnome any more. But just for you, I fired it up and grabbed a screenshot of the overview.

It's also one of the few that also has GTK2 and GTK3 themes available as well. Regular and dark

Packages available in the Fedora repo:
============================= N/S Matched: zukitwo =============================
gnome-shell-theme-zukitwo.noarch : Zukitwo GNOME Shell theme
zukitwo-gtk2-theme.noarch : Zukitwo GTK+2 themes
zukitwo-gtk3-theme.noarch : Zukitwo GTK+3 themes
zukitwo-metacity-theme.noarch : Zukitwo Metacity themes

Re: I finally did it ...

Yeah. Dark. Not so much thrilled with dark. Which really means I need to get back to work on the next/last G3 theme idea I had. Although it will likely be adults-only. <....>

Re: I finally did it ...

I can't have any adults-only themes here. I would never get any work done!

Blah.. Why did I have to mention work? Reminded me that I have a few things that need to get done today.

Re: I finally did it ...

Am I the only one amused by Dan's insistence on using serif fonts for his window decorations? Dan is so old old-school!

Yuck. GNOME Shell 3.4 finally increased the size of the font used in the overview so that it was readable. I guess themes for the previous cause the font/icon size ratio to be miscalculated or something.

Good to know that zukitwo is in official repos.

@Dan
Your Serif fonts are killing my eyes.
