alternative gnome file browser

I asking for an alternative to nautilus. The problem I have with nautilus is that it take up
too much screen real estate, the icons are too big, etc. My screen is 1280 x 1024 and
I dont plan on going higher.

Any alternative should have the option of using small, smaller icons and when resized
keeps the smaller size the next time the file browser window is opened.

thanks and if nothing is out there will have bear with it.

Try a different theme such as clearlooks-compact.

I was never impressed by the large icons and wasted real estate. A windows user once exclaimed to me that Linux looked like a "toy" because of this.

Not so much now with this compact theme customized to my preferences!

I use emelfm2 when I need to do something more than a simple operation. I have some of my folders set to list file and folder details instead of icons; but emelfm makes it easier to move stuff around, and just see what's in different directories.

I just found dolphin in my menu and that looks like it would be useful, also. I just hadn't looked at it before.
