Xfce - howto set env variables?

Thought it would be easy - guess I was wrong.
I've tried editing .bash_profile, creating .xinitrc (both in home folder) and etc/profile but with no success.

I've also tried creating a .sh file where I put:

export MY_VARIABLE="/path_to_desired_location"

but somehow this .sh does not work ( I may be missing something).

Atm I have to enter this variable manually in the terminal - in terminal the command works .

So how do I do that?

Re: Xfce - howto set env variables?

The end of my .bash_profile has the following:
Code:
# User specific environment and startup programs

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/.local/bin:$HOME/bin
VICI=$HOME/dev/vici

export PATH
export VICI
You will need to log in again for these to take effect, since .bash_profile is only run at that time.

That's very old fashioned thinking.
The current model is that it's holographic nested virtualities of turtles, all the way down.
