Video goes crazy

I have just upgraded to F 11. My problem does not happen all the time but it does happen enough to make things tough.
Problem: The video looks like it is being overlaid in memory. Lines get jagged characters are unreadable and words just disappear. I do not know any other way to describe what is happening. The video goes crazy and I generally have to reboot my system to get it to work but sometimes this does not work and I have to shut everything down.
System configuration:
OS:Fedora 11
video card:ATI Radeon 8500

If anyone can tell me what is going on and how I can fix the problem I will certainly appreciate it.
