Radeon R7 M265 VGA & other hardware deficiency

Hi.

I investigated hardware of my laptop with Fedora 26 X64 bit.

I have many deficiency ! Most important is dedicated VGA (Radeon R7 M265). I know that it is supported by current kernel BUT SUPPORT DISABLED BY DEFAULT.

Please is there news about enable support by default in kernel for this VGA ? I was informed that it will be enabled at kernel 4.13 Is this still correct or it will be delayed for kernel 4.14 ?

Also, it seem that there are other hardware need drivers in my laptop ! I know open source Radeon driver: xorg-x11-drv-amdgpu But I do not know drivers needed for other hardware ...

Please see following output (I will post them 1 per each post):

Code:
$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 5500 (rev 09)

Re: Radeon 256M VGA & other hardware deficiency

Last output, is very long beyond post in this forum directly, so I attached it here as text file. Please look to it, it seem that it show other hardwares (not only dedicated VGA) need drivers .....

It is output of following command:

Quote:
$ lspci -vv
Attached Files
File Type: txt hardwares.txt (11.9 KB, 11 views)

Re: Radeon 256M VGA & other hardware deficiency

Please admin/modulators can you correct title of this post ? I already corrected but after end of suitable time, so that title of post still wrong.

Please just correct modle of dedicated VGA: the correct is Radeon R7 M265 while I dectated it wrongly as Radeon 256M

This error my cause members not to read post because no such model.

Best

Re: Radeon R7 M256 VGA & other hardware deficiency

Hi.

I discovered this link in Internet:

http://news.softpedia.com/news/linux...s-516784.shtml

It say:

Prominent features of the Linux 4.12 kernel include initial support for AMD Radeon RX Vega graphics cards

I understood from above that: finally Linux kernel support for my AMD Radeon R7 M265 now is enabled by default, isn't it ?

Please your kind help about this !

No, AMD RX Vega are an entirely different generation and are specifically high-end desktop hardware. Don't assume because RX Vega is supported that your card will now suddenly work any better.

Do you know any thing new about my Radeon ? Is it still planed for 4.13.x or delayed to 4.14.x kernel version ?

Re: Radeon R7 M256 VGA & other hardware deficiency

I don't work for AMD and am not involved in upstream kernel development, I also don't sell or support Lenovo ThinkPad E Series notebooks. All the ThinkPads I've ever dealt with have been T Series and not contained a switchable AMD GPU

Do you mean Radeon R7 M265?
In that case, your card is a South Island model i.e. GCN 1.0 according to your provided hardware info.
You can use mystro256 amd-staging-kernel COPR repository. On boot parameter, add amdgpu.si_support=1 radeon.si_support=0.
A stable version is on amd-mainline-kernel as well (currently based on kernel 4.11.x by the time of writing). Be in mind South Island cards support is experimental.
Bug reports can be filed at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/. Product is DRI, component DRI/AMDgpu and version DRI-git.

Sorry for my errors !

Just I like to know for how long support will end experiental stage & become enabled by default ?

I read that it will be at version 4.13.x But I then read that it MAY delayed till 4.14.x

Any one know more about possible kernel version ? I do not prefer use of modifed experimental kernel.

I like to play many Winows games on my Linux via Wine & certain of them need high VGA power.

Best.

It is hard to know because of migration from the current radeon to amdgpu module for South Island graphic cards dealing with possible regression. See https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=194761
What you can do is installing one of those kernel for testing purpose and providing feedback to help developers improving support for South Island card.
