Mo Better Chromium

A few months ago I found a version of Chromium, or maybe it was just a library, that allows Chromium to play all types of media. When I upgraded to F26 that version or library got nuked by my liberal use of --allowerasing, and I don't remember where I got the thing(s). Was it Copr? The Russian repos? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Re: Mo Better Chromium

Just out of curiosity, what type of media files are you trying to play?

(For fun, I build Chromium (currently version 62) right off the head of their git repo. I originally started from the Russian Fedora specfile and have intensively hacked and modified it over the past few years as development and the toolchains change.)

Re: Mo Better Chromium

The default Chromium will play audio files and flash, and videos on You Tube, etc. but will not play the short videos that often appear on Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram. When I installed the other Chromium (or library) all of those would then play. Those short videos are often labeled as Gif, but if you download them they are actually mp4 files.

Re: Mo Better Chromium

I have pepper flash installed but chromium-widevinecdm-plugin and chromium-libs-media-freeworld aren't in the F26 repos yet.

Re: Mo Better Chromium

Glad you cleared that up. I'm an amateur radio operator and RF means something completely different to me. I was puzzled by your use of it in your post

Re: Mo Better Chromium

For anyone else who would like full media functionality in Chromium the necessary files are in this specific Russian repo; russianfedora-fixes.repo Not sure if I'm allowed to post an install link on this forum.

Re: Mo Better Chromium

no the links aren't allowed. the home page containing repository configuration instructions is easily found though via this page

for anyone interested in setting up the repository don't be put off by the site language. google translate works perfectly.

Re: Mo Better Chromium

I just downloaded a fresh update to Chromium. I have it, I rarely use it, as I am a habitual person who sticks to firefox.

Check for new updates,

Re: Mo Better Chromium

i prefer opera to chromium these days, I used to use it but find opera faster, with better battery saving, built in ad-filtering and has a nicer page centric layout.

Re: Mo Better Chromium

I have Opera installed but haven't looked at it in a while. Think I'll get the latest update and have another look at it. Always glad to ditch a Google app if something else will do the job.
