strange things are going on

so...I already posted that I have problems with Open Office Word processor. But that is far from the only strange thing going on with my computer right now. I can see that 64 software updates are ready for me, and nothing happens when I click "view updates". I saw that an other person in here also had problems receiving updates and tried to go into system-administration-services...And nothing happened, no window pop'ed up, nothing...right now it seems as if the only thing working on my computer is the Internet - and that is only with cable I can make that work right now (think I have to compile my driver - which I don't really know what means, and I don't feel like juping into right now where I can do practically nothing on my PC). My terminal behaves crazy and well...I just feel lost. I'm new in Linux and run Fedora 8 Werewolf.
Anyone got an idea how to solve these strange problems, or for starters, how to figure out what is going on? Thanx a lot, I could really need a helping hand here...
