Kernel 4.6 breaks intel graphics, dis_ucode_ldr is not the solution

When I fresh install Fedora 24 with XFCE blend, I have working graphics on the 4.5 kernel, when I dnf update to kernel 4.6 I get a black screen after startx or startxfce4 (or when using display manager).

I am able to see the Fedora logo from Plymouth and I am also able to log on to multiuser target.

I tried installing the graphics driver directly from Intel, same result, also removed xorg-x11-drv-intel and all other intel specific packages, same result.

I removed all packages from non-default repo's. But no luck, all I get is a black screen where X used to be. Booting back into the 4.5 kernel, all works again.

lspci -nnk | grep -A3 VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0416] (rev 06)
Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device [1179:0002]
Kernel driver in use: i915
Kernel modules: i915

Here is my kernel startup line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rd.lvm.lv=fedorab/root rd.lvm.lv=vg_dev/swap rhgb intel_pstate=disable dis_ucode_ldr"

dis_ucode_ldr does not resolve the problem, removing intel_pstate does not help.

Anyone any hints on how to fix this? I saw some related posts, but so for I have not found any solution.

Thanks Barry

Suggested over IRC:
10:49:45 AM - fireball```: barrydg, try 'i915.modeset=0' in grub

This works, but disables brightness control, and sets the display to 100% brightness. An other solution suggested is using the kernel from rawhide.

adding acpi_backlight=vendor to linux command line
allows me to control brightness via
echo 4 > /sys/class/backlight/toshiba/brightness

where I use to:
echo 4900 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

Hi Barry,

i got the same problem :-( can get laptop running via nomodeset kernel parameter. Will try your workaround.

Did your problem resolve with newest 4.7 kernel update? Mine didn't.

Best regards,
sephren

Re: Kernel 4.6 breaks intel graphics, dis_ucode_ldr is not the solution

With the patch above, I could not get a secondary screen to work, also there is no graphics acceleration and sometimes artifacts are shown.

I am not sure I tried 4.7.... but I did try rawhide kernel 4.8.0-0.rc3.git1.2.fc26.x86_64 not working also, second screen not working, no cpu scaling.

I have had this problem mostly on laptops, so far all desktop systems, vm's and so on seem to work just fine.

with acpi_backlight=vendor I cannot wake my computer after putting it to sleep.

The last kernel with no regression was 4.5.5-300 for me.

Yep, same here. I cannot wake laptop after hibernation, too. But i use just plain "nomodeset". No artifacts so far, but not a nice experience as well. Is there a bug report for this already?

I guess there is no specific bug filed yet, seems like this one fell through the cracks after the initial bugs where reported on 4.6. Tquilha can you open a bug an report back here? Thanks

Intel, the vendor with once top notch Linux drivers, seems to be slacking lately.

4.7 breaks it for me but found post #2 was a good workaround for now, even though I lose the exact native res with the display and some animations are not working
