I'm guessing Fedora Workstation runs a lot faster than W7 too. 2GB is not really sufficient for 64-bit W7 Ultimate really. Nice of the government to have that initiative though. Good luck with your studies.

Thanks, but now I'm employed. This laptop is going to be my work and testing platform for now. I'm planning to buy a 5th Gen Core i5 Lenovo model in the near future. This laptop came pre-installed with Windows 7 Professional ( 32-Bit ) and BOSS GNU/Linux ( BOSS -> Bharath Operating System Solutions developed by NRCFOSS/C-DAC of India ). I uninstalled both of them and now got F22 Workstation running alongside W7 Ultimate ( 64-Bit ). Yes 32-Bit is very sufficient for my current work, but I just wanted to have the fancy of having a 64-Bit....
Today I'm planning to Install Fedora 22 Workstation ( 64-Bit ) alongside Windows 7 Ultimate ( 64-Bit ) on my brother's Dell Inspiron Model, which has 1st Gen Core i3 CPU, 3GB RAM, 300GB HDD. Will post the experience of that once its complete...
I'm dual-booting Fedora 21 ( 64-Bit ) ( Scientific Spin ) with Windows 8.1 Enterprise. Some times the audio fails to initialize in Fedora. I used the 'alsactl restore' command to initialize the sound hardware. My laptop is a new one,

Comments:
Proprietary video drivers for the GPU have been discontinued by the manufacturer with the release of kernel version 2.6. Open Source implementation works just as intended, but the 3d performance is severely decreased, as expected. Powersaving seems to work just fine.
Suspend to disk enabled with correct grub kernel cmdline, otherwise works just as intended.
WLAN card requires proprietary firmware, so on distributions that do not include it (like debian) WLAN doesn't work out of the box.
I've experienced massive problems trying to get any distribution installed from a USB drive, I have tried multiple methods or writing a bootable USB, including dd'ing the ISO to the USB drive.
None of them works reliably. My solution is to burn the iso to a CD/DVD disc, it boots right off.
With few tweaks including installation and proper installation of TLP daemon I have managed to get battery life on par with Windows which the laptop shipped with originally.
I read elsewhere on the net that AMD/ATI is offering more Linux support.

I have learned through practice that when using dd to copy an ISO to a USB device to use the sync command afterwards to flush the buffers and complete all pending write operations.
Code:sudo dd if=/Users/djl/Fedora-Live-Workstation-x86_64-23_Beta-1.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=8M sync

Comments: It has been far from an easy install - took A LOT of trial and error.
I tied installing from a USB drive, multiple methods or writing a bootable USB, dd'ing the ISO to the USB drive.
None of them works reliably. My solution is to burn the iso to a CD/DVD disc.
Now it seems I have a stable installation, finally!
I need help! getting the networking ethernet NIC configd... I performed the install from the full Server DVD installation, downloaded from Fedora website.

Just to let you know your post didn't go unnoticed, I tried the method you've recommended.
And as expected - the results weren't any better. Laptop responds with "Operating System not found" after choosing the USB flash drive as boot device.
Like I said, it has to be something with the device itself or BIOS.
Regards
I've used that method with Fedora 22 Beta, Fedora 22, Fedora 23 Beta and Fedora 23 and a Linux based Intel Diagnostic tool so I know it works. Is this a UEFI system? Fedora 23 is signed so it should work in any event. Are there any other USB drives connected to the system? I am sure the answer is no but I have to ask.
Are there any BIOS updates available from the manufacturer? I have resolved a number of flakey problems over the years with a firmware update and after a hundred or so updates I've only bricked one device. (I worked in IT Support at one time, ninety or so of the systems were IBM Thinkpads from the mid nineties. The device I bricked was a brand new Linksys router so it could have been defective out of the box.)

The only time I've seen that is if I wrote to sdb1 for example instead of sdb.
Is smolt still available? I see references to it being retired.
Is this perchance one of those U3 USB sticks that someone recycled? Look for U3 markings on it. U3 was an attempt to distribute portable applications on a USB device. I bought a few without realizing what they were and downloaded a USB formatting tool from the manufacturers web site to wipe the bootable partition off the drive. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U3_%28software%29
A U3 device announces itself to the USB hub as separate devices. Would a dd statement write to the device or the virtualized U3 device?
