unable to login as root

Hi there, on my fedora 16 installation, I am facing an unuusal problem.

I am not able to login as a 'root' at all. Even the su command from bash does not work. It prompts for password but hangs thereafter.

What could be the cause and what is the solution?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks in advance
