Saving Desktop setup under Gnome 3?

I am still plugging away at understanding gnome 3, but I am having lots of trouble.

I set up things the way I want them with several workspaces I can switch among. But I lose all that when I logout and login again. Under previous versions of gnome, my desktop came back pretty much like it was when I logged out and logged in again. Is there some easy way to do this under Gnome 3?

Or is the Gnome 3 philsophy that you should almost never logout so it isn't necessary?
