Using xmms, select Options > Preferences > Audio I/O Plugins. Select MPEG Layer 1/2/3 > Configure. Select Streaming and check the box, Save Stream to Disk.
Don't know if that's the format you are trying to save, but that will save Shoutcast streams, for example.

what r u streaming? WMA/MP3 files from .asx / asf or mp3 files from a m3u playlist? for .asx/asf you can get SDP (just google it) to download Windows Media files...
Even easier, ge LimeWire.

.asx files via windows media, .smil via realaudio.
and it looks like SDP is a windows program.

Streamripper. See the first question/answer here to see what streams it supports.
You may also want to check streamtuner (supports streamripper).

the streamripper looks nice, but as i said before, i'm looking to record .asx and .smil, which streamripper does not do.
any other ideas?

yeah, SDP in windows. use Wine to install and use it. It'll install to /home/yourusername/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/SDP Downloader/sdp.exe
