    what is meaning of sha1sum?

    What is meaning of 'sha1sum' i found it from

    Both Sha1Sum and MD5SUM are algorithms to check the validity of a file.

    Redhat suddenly started using SHA1SUM and dropped MD5SUM for FC4

    because MD5 is no safe any longer,
    it has been cracked by a Chinese decryption researcher

    So what is the process of verifying the sums, please.

    It wasn't really cracked, it is just that they can find two different inputs where the md5 output are the same, ending up with a clash of md5 outputes... so it is still impossible to "decrypt" it; but rather it is just that the md5 hash aren't unique anymore.

    Instead of doing md5sum file1 file2; you do sha1sum file1 file2;

    to check individual image:
    sha1sum xxx.iso

    to check all the images
    sha1sum -c SHA1SUM

    I found following dicription from http://fedora.redhat.com/download/


    After downloading the ISO images, check the SHA1 checksums for the ISO images to ensure that your download was successful. Do this by running the sha1sum program from a shell prompt against your ISO images and comparing the values returned against the ones published by Red Hat. The file from Red Hat containing the official sha1sum values is called SHA1SUM and is located in the same directory as the ISO images on the FTP site.

    The following illustrates the correct syntax for the sha1sum command:

    sha1sum <isofilename>

    In the above command, replace <isofilename> with the correct file name.

    If the SHA1 sums match, burn the ISO images to CD-Rs or CD-RWs. Note: writing the ISOs to CD requires a program such as cdrecord. If you want to perform a hard drive installation instead, copy the ISO image files to a location on the hard drive that will not be reformated for Fedora Core.

    Note : It is just example how sha1sum work.

    sha1sum to check ISOs in WinXP ?

    Hi,

    I've downloaded the FC4 DVD ISO to my HD under WinXP. I couldn't find the sha1sum program on my local FTP mirror to check the image, so I burned it.

    After burning, I had the data verified, and it all checked out.

    I then booted off the DVD and ran the check with "linux checkmedia" at the boot: prompt, and you guessed, it the DVD is no good.

    This leads me to believe that my downloaded image is not good.

    How can I check that my download is good under Windows ? It appears to me that sha1sum procedure (quoted) assumes that the user is already using linux, and has sha1sum already installed on his machine.
