    Thumbs up Animated desktop wallpaper!

Yet another reason I love Linux!

Not sure how many know about this, but, disable your desktop icons, open a terminal and run the following command and then sit back and watch your desktop:
    Code:
    /usr/X11R6/lib/xscreensaver/xmatrix -root
I think this only works in KDE but I could be wrong. Anyone care to post whether this works in other desktop environments?

This seems to be one of the many screen savers installed with FC3. I had a look in /usr/X11R6/lib/xscreensaver/ and ran a few of the others there and this is amazing. I never knew you could have an animated desktop wallpaper.

I opened the screen saver control panel, set some preferences for the various screen savers, and even made some links to this command (with other screen savers) in my panel.

    Cool huh?

    UPDATE:
You can run the screen saver name with the "--help" option, just like any other app, to see more options to run with the command.
    Example: /usr/X11R6/lib/xscreensaver/glmatrix -no-waves -no-fog -no-rotate -root

Screen shot? OK, but a screenshot wouldn't do any good because it would look like a plain wallpaper image - no animation in a screenshot.

The command I ran to make this happen was
    Code:
    /usr/X11R6/lib/xscreensaver/glmatrix -root
and you need to disable desktop icons for it to work.

You can see gkrellm on the right side of the screen and it shows CPU usage while the screen saver is being run as the desktop wallpaper.

Nice, but pretty useless without icons
Moving backgrounds should also be possible in E17, but haven't tried it (yet).

icons on the desktop? I have never had any use for them. I find it easier to get to the desktop via Konqueror.
It was my impression that e17 had animated desktop background.. or so I thought after I saw the e17 avi.

Yes, that of e17 is correct, but I haven't found one

I use the icons primarily for my USB stick mounting and cd-rom and that sort of stuff.
