numlock / numeric keypad not working

    Hello,

I remember that my numeric keypad used to work on my fedora core 1 computer but at some point it just stopped working. It doesn't matter if the numlock is on or off, pressing on the numeric keypad causes my mouse pointer to start moving pixel by pixel.

I read about numlockx in the posts and compiled it and ran it - it did turn the numlock on and off, but the numeric keypad still behaves the same way.

Does anyone know where I might begin looking to fix my numeric keypad problem? I know it's not hardware since it used to work. It might have been after a kernel upgrade that this started happening but I'm not sure.

    Thanks in advance,

    -Matt

Don't you think he'd figured out/ fixed that in the 3 and half years since he made the post?

maybe the first guy fixed it, maybe not ... but the reply from martinellison is still helpful for people like me, people experiencing the same problem that have landed on this page from a google search.

    Thanks, martinellison.

    Ditto on this.

My keypad began behaving in exactly the same manner a few days ago and I'm running Fedora 11!

For people that may land here, there is a related topic that solved a numpad problem resulting from a changed default setting.

I encountered this problem today and found this thread via a Google search. Thanks martinellison.

The fix in the other thread suggests pressing:
    <ctrl><shift><num lock>

Something about mouse cursor mode. Might wanna read the other thread if the above doesn't work.

Re: numlock / numeric keypad not working

I also found this thread from Google search. Dunno why my Numlock was also not working suddenly. But it is the <Ctrl><Alt><Numlock> solves the problem for me. LOL. Once the keypad can be activated, interestingly the usual press on <Numlock> now able to turn on/off the keypad single handedly. I hope it stays that way after the next reboot.

Re: numlock / numeric keypad not working

    For whoever is interested,

I have had the same problem. My keypad was working just fine and after some updates, it stopped working. What I found out is that one of these updates set the keypad able to control the mouse pointer.

The way to solve the problem and bring back the keypad in Gnome is to go to the "System" --> "Preferences" --> "Keyboard" --> "Mouse Keys"
There you un-tick the "Pointer can be controlled using the keypad" and your traditional functionality of your keypad is restored.

    Thanks for the info AegeanFalcon.

Why would anyone create this combination (<CTRL><SHIFT><NUMLOCK>) to access the numeric keypad?

Thumbs up Re: numlock / numeric keypad not working

Running Fedora 14 and had a kernel upgrade by yum a few days ago. I think it was since then that my keypad doesn't type numbers, but moves the mouse pointer - regardless of the Num Lock status.

Thanks!! Ctrl-Shift-NumLock fixed it for me too.
