    Error upgrading Dell laptop firmware

For several days I've received an update message from Discover about Dell System Firmware (along with other updates). The firmware update always presents the error "The input is not of cabinet format", to which I respond "Huh????".

    I am using up-to-date F37 on a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop.

Is anyone else having this problem?
Is there any solution available except waiting for the update to be removed (and perhaps re-introduced)?

    Thanks

Re: Error upgrading Dell laptop firmware

cabinet format is a Windows format. the firmware update expects the windows cab format as that is what the firmware update files are usually distributed in.

But, there seems to be a bug in shim that gives this error

    https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/issues/3537

    https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugr...cgi?bug=990447

It seems that disabling secure boot and applying the firmware update, then re-enabling secure boot works.

Thanks for the info, D. I'll try that.

    ...aaannnndddd that didn't work.
Perhaps I'm confused here. Do I need to reboot after disabling secure boot for it to take effect?
    Thanks.

Well, yes, you do have to reboot to disable secure boot.

Re: Error upgrading Dell laptop firmware

    Ooofff! That was painful.
I (habitually) use the Dvorak keyboard layout, but it seems the laptop/software doesn't recognize that until somewhat late in the booting process. Standard keyboard layout only.
It also seems that the mokutil software wants verification by entering some (at least one?) characters before that keyboard layout change. Meaning, my habits wouldn't let me get past that until I "guessed" it expected the standard layout.
Sigh. Would it be asking too much for Fedora to allow people to "see" what was entered as they type the password instead of showing *s? I guess it is. :-(
