    What is the pk-gtk-module ?

I have a new F33 install and when I run some applications I get a "Failed to load pk-gtk-module".

    What is the pk-gtk-module for?
How do I correct the warning message?

    Thanks.

Re: What is the pk-gtk-module ?

You need the PackageKit-gtk3-module package installed:
    Code:
    dnf install PackageKit-gtk3-module
    OS: Fedora 38 x86_64 | Machine: Lenovo ThinkCentre M91P | CPU: Intel Core i5-2500 (4)@3.30GHz | RAM: 32GB PC3-12800 DDR3 | Disk: 500GB SATA | Video: Intel HD Graphics 2000 128MB | Sound: Turtle Beach Santa Cruz CS4630 | Ethernet: Intel 82579LM

Tried that and it seems it's already installed.

    [jack@DaffyDuck ~]$ sudo dnf install PackageKit-gtk3-module
    [sudo] password for jack:
Last metadata expiration check: 0:52:14 ago on Thu 18 Mar 2021 08:10:03 AM EDT.
    Package PackageKit-gtk3-module-1.2.2-2.fc33.x86_64 is already installed.
    Dependencies resolved.
    Nothing to do.
    Complete!
    [jack@DaffyDuck ~]$
    Now what do I do?

What applications are giving you the error about this module failing to load?

I installed VueScan and was able to run it and scan something with no problems on my F33 system:

I also downloaded Moneydance and was able to run it with no problems:

Can you show the output in a terminal window when you try to run either application from the command line? It would help to see that.

Vuescan appears to run fine as I am able to use the scanner.
But I am having issues with Money Dance in that the screen in not rendering properly.
Below is a screen shot of Money Dance.
    As for my original question.
What is it for and how do get I rid of the messages?

The weird thing is I don't even have the PackageKit-gtk3-module package installed and I was able to run those applications with no problem. Where are you seeing the error about that module? Try running /opt/Moneydance/Moneydance from a terminal window and show the terminal output. I'm not sure why a Java application would even need PackageKit-gtk3-module.

I aways launch it from a terminal window. That's how I see the message.
    Here it is.

Re: What is the pk-gtk-module ?

Its probably trying to use PackageKit to remind the user to update it.

Teams on Linux just shows "check your package manager for updates" when you select "check for updates" which is funny to me

I think you're right. I don't think it affects the functionality of the application, which doesn't even need PackageKit to be installed.

That's not necessarily true. If you look closely at the screen shot and the MD application you will see that the menu items that are normally on the top tool bar are not displayed.
What I'm am talking about will be more apparent if you compare my screen shot to the one you posted.
Something is causing that. That's what I'm trying to figure out.

We got a bit off topic here. So back to my initial question:
What is the pk-gtk-module module for?
How do I get those warning messages to go away?

That's what we're trying to figure out. It doesn't appear to be needed for running Moneydance. As I showed, Moneydance runs on my F33 system not only without the PackageKit-gtk3-module, but also without PackageKit itself, which isn't even installed on my system.

The description of the PackageKit-gtk3-module package (which provides pk-gtk-module) says:
    Code:
Description : The PackageKit GTK3+ module allows any Pango application to
: install fonts from configured repositories using PackageKit.
So the menu problem might be a font issue. The widgets in the Moneydance menu are part of Java Swing or JavaFX, and they might be trying to use certain fonts. If the fonts are found on your system, then the application comes up normally (as on my F33 system). If the fonts are not found, then the application might call pk-gtk-module to load the fonts. I checked the contents of the PackageKit-gtk3-module package, and it puts a shared library in the /usr/lib64/gtk-3.0/modules/ directory. Try adding that directory (as root) to the paths checked for libraries:
    Code:
    echo "/usr/lib64/gtk-3.0/modules/" > /etc/ld.so.conf.d/pk-gtk.conf
Then run ldconfig (as root). Then try running Moneydance.

Re: What is the pk-gtk-module ?

I tried what you suggested and the warning/error message disappeared but that didn't fix Moneydance though.
I have decided to dump Moneydance and switch to GNU Cash. So, as far as I'm concerned the problem is solved.

    Thanks.

Re: What is the pk-gtk-module ?

I wonder if it has to do with your Java version. I'm running Oracle's JDK 8, but I'm guessing you're using the OpenJDK from the Fedora repos. I have noticed that third-party applications that always work with Oracle's JDK sometimes don't work properly with OpenJDK. In theory there should be no difference, but I've seen differences.
