Fedora 31: approved way to swap caps lock and control?
I'm looking at settings->devices and see keyboard shortcuts but not simply keyboard.
I know many old school ways to do this but I'm wondering if there's a way specific to this GUI/toolkit.

You might take a look at an older thread https://forums.fedoraforum.org/showt...-keyboard-keys. This discusses xmodmap and its gui front end xkeycaps.

Re: Fedora 31: approved way to swap caps lock and control?
Thanks Jims. I've used xmodmap since like 1989 but I'm never sure how far these integrated session managers want to control things, and often once the session manager has a way it wants to do it, you cause yourself trouble by trying to do anything else. So I'm just checking if that's the case with keyboard maps. I can't even figure out what default session manager it's bundled but I hear it's gnome. Thanks again!

OK, here's a specific answer.
Fedora ships with Gnome as the GUI. It lets you tweak some behavior with a utility called gnome-tweaks. Naturally, this program isn't even installed by default.
To install: dnf install gnome-tweak-tool
To run: gnome-tweaks
Go to: Keyboard & Mouse --> Additional Layout Options --> Caps Lock as Control

Re: Fedora 31: approved way to swap caps lock and control?
i thought you'd found it Frank, and was going to send you a million dollars for saving my sanity, but it doesn't work for me in F32
still there may be something else useful gnome-tweaks can do; time will tell.
as for xmodmap, it has burned my fingers more than once and id rather not go near it again.
there was a simple solution in F29 (forget what it was now) but nothing seems to work in F32.
xkeycaps eh Jim? let's see... yes! ok Jim, where do i send the money?
