Question Fedora 30 + GNOME screen stays black when laptop lid reopened

Just dedicated a mackbook air "early 2010" model to Fedora. Installed the workstation version with GNOME and ran "dnf update". Everything seems good except for a problem when re-opening the lid. The screen stays black. When the lid is re-opened I can see that something is happening because it looks like the faint glow of the backlight becomes visible but no GUI is displayed. This happens whether a user is logged in or not.

If a user is logged in I can ssh into the laptop as that user and run
    Code:
    killall -3 gnome-shell
to get the login screen to be displayed again.

Any ideas what may be wrong?

I've always found hibernate/suspend to be a bit flakey in Linux, although I haven't tried to use it in about 5 years so maybe it works better these days. Personally I disable hibernate/suspend, if I've finished using my laptop I switch it off, booting is fast enough these days that I don't mind waiting 20 seconds to start using it.

A quick click of the power button should work.

I definitely disabled that, it's far too close to the backspace key on my macbook to allow a single miss click to hibernate.

One thing I don't want to do is have to keep setting up my workspaces just for a closing/opening the lid.

Unfortunately tapping the power button does the same thing as lifting the lid. A faint glow of the backlight shows for a minute or so, but screen shows nothing.

Seeing this in the logs which may be related:
