GTX 1060 (Driver issues) (Newish to Fedora)

Hi there, Before i get started just wanted to let everyone know that im semi-new to Fedora Ive used Ubuntu a bit more but im branching out to new distros and trying to learn things like (installing graphics drivers on linux) and stuff.. So please go easy on me if i don't understand everything the greatest please do keep in mind im trying my best to learn and such also all replies are greatly appreciated.. Anyways, I've installed graphics drivers before on Fedora back when i had a uh GTX 970 GPU but I've recently upgraded to a 1060 and apparently the newer graphics cards have different ways to install them? I could be wrong but that's what I've heard at least.. Anyways i was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to walk me through installing GTX 1060 drivers (the easiest way anyone knows of preferably) as everything Ive tried personally hasn't worked out sadly i can do everything i need to do on Fedora just gotta learn to get past this hurdle and teach myself how to do it.. As mentioned above all replies are greatly appreciated even if they're negative. Thank you.

Re: GTX 1060 (Driver issues) (Newish to Fedora)

    Hello mechagigatekkin.

First I will say welcome to Fedora.
Now...it's not gonna be walk in the park with this card as it has issues with GDM (Gnome Display).
so before we go to that process few question if you please.
1 - have you Update the system?
2 - have you add the repositories to the system?
3 - do you mind to go with Cinnamon-Environment-Desktop?
4 - have you Enable repositories on the Software Center yet?

    mechagigatekkin,

    Before you go to Update!!!
Let's first install Cinnamon, then will do all the process there.
I will post here for you the commands, and you will log in to the terminal as ROOT.
so do not start yet the Update for the system please.

Just first log in to the terminal as ROOT,and add this command and Apply with (Y) to the Questions.

    Code:
    sudo dnf install @cinnamon-desktop-environment
when the process is done reboot the system, and when you will be on the log in window,
change to the top Option it will be Cinnamon.

and let me know when you there.

Hmmmkey, when it's enough, it's enough.

Cinnamon? What for? He stated he prefers Gnome by far, telling him to use Cinnamon for making Nvidia drivers work is just almost rude. And of course completely unneeded.

    @OP.
Unless you made some let's say non-standard steps, installing the drivers is quite simple. I could point you to the rpmfusion guide here. Please, go thru it first w/o installing Cinnamon or any other funny stuff and reply back with questions on the rpmfusion guide, should you have any.
Before using the guide, adding rpmfusion repos is needed, as described on their site too. Again, if unclear, just ask. But don't install Cinnamon please, it's complete nonsense to do so just for Nvidia to work..

I understand your concern but uh.. And that's nice of you to look out for me but I planned on having Cinnamon as a side DE for later use anyways incase i wanted to switch i'll try both and see for myself if Gnome on the uh 1060 drivers really are that unbearable assuming it doesn't break my OS i doubt it does.. Thanks for caring though

No, it won't brake anything, it's just that it has nothing to do with working Nvidia drivers and you saying you prefer Gnome.
I'm not exactly sure though, if there won't be any little conflicts here and there, as Cinnamon's codebase was originally based on Gnome 3 and I guess this is still true to some extent. Well, you'll see.

Re: GTX 1060 (Driver issues) (Newish to Fedora)

    Hello mechagigatekkin.

First I must say that I Admire the way you do things,Thank you for that part.

So You on Cinnamon Desktop at this point Right?
If so,First let's get all the repositories done Before we will go to the Nvidia resolve.
Just follow the one after one commands in the terminal as ROOT User and will get there.
Just to make sure we will not change the GDM at this point, and you will not get issue with the log in part.

add repositories (the new repositories/update once) Apply with (Y) to the Questions in the terminal about key+repository.

    Code:
     sudo dnf install fedora-workstation-repositories
    Then:

    s
    Code:
    udo dnf install https://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm https://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm
    then:

    Install Adobe
    Code:
    rpm -ivh http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/adobe-release/adobe-release-x86_64-1.0-1.noarch.rpm
    rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-adobe-linux
    Then:

    Install Adobe Flash Player
    Code:
    dnf install flash-plugin alsa-plugins-pulseaudio libcurl
    Then:

    Code:
    sudo dnf groupupdate core
    Then:

    Code:
    sudo dnf groupupdate multimedia
    Then:

    Code:
    sudo dnf groupupdate sound-and-video
    Then:

    Code:
    sudo dnf install rpmfusion-free-release-tainted
    Then:

    Code:
    sudo dnf install libdvdcss
    Then:

    Code:
    sudo dnf install rpmfusion-nonfree-release-tainted
    Then:

    Code:
    dnf config-manager --add-repo=http://negativo17.org/repos/fedora-multimedia.repo
    Then:

    Code:
dnf groupinstall multimedia ; dnf groupupdate multimedia
    Then:

    Code:
    dnf config-manager --add-repo=http://negativo17.org/repos/fedora-multimedia.repo
    Then:

    Code:
    dnf install dnf-utils

Now After you have done that process, open the software Center, and click on the top right software repositories.
There make sure that you Enable the repositories of RPMFusion free/non free +Nvidia wait with the update repositories.
when you done that part, close the pop up window of the repositories, and click the update tab,on the top left click reload.
    That will sync the repositories.
when it's done (I will not go to Update the system from there),Open terminal and as ROOT User.

    Code:
    dnf clean all
    After that -
    Code:
    dnf update
when the Update process will be done, reboot the system.
let me know when you back.

Just one point to make clear the change with the new negativo17 repositories = you will have them all in dnfdragora!!!

I know you said not to restart but uh.. I may have already sadly.. In a attempt to get this other driver to install that isn't installing for some reason? Not sure why.. The other one did..

Re: GTX 1060 (Driver issues) (Newish to Fedora)

Right well...the issue that you have is to remove the old one.
so Open terminal as ROOT User and remove the Old one.

    Code:
    dnf remove xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-3:418.74-1.fc30.x86_84
    After that use:
    Code:
    dnf clean all
    then:

    Code:
    dnf update --best --allowerasing
