Fedora 29-30 upgrade - no second screen at boot each time

    Hi,
I recently upgraded from F29 to F30. At each boot there is no second monitor until I play. I don't have to do much - just try a different setting then put it back to "Join Displays" and away it goes!
One display is using a display port connection and the other is VGA.
    Any ideas appreciated.
    Thanks
    John

Anyone else with this issue. I have found that the best way to get it going is to flick the monitor onto an incorrect resolution then back to the right one and all is good.

Still no good. Sometimes several reboots are required to get the second screen to come up. Is there nobody else having this issue?

    Hello johnsd.

1 - have you install the video card Drivers in the software center - add-ons - hardware Drivers?
2 - Under dnfdragora - search -AMD - in the bottom install that package.

    3 -
    Code:
    reboot
the system and update your post please.

And Yes for the question about One display.
You can add -Applets - Display switcher.
and there you can manage the Displays.

Thanks FFedora - I will take a look at this later today (this evening NZ time). Doesn't Fedora now use Wayland instead of Xorg. Never the less I will take a look at drivers. However something does appear to be incorrect in the upgrade process if all was working in previous versions of Fedora?
    Regards

    Hello johnsd.

Here is something that is on the end User part to cover first.
The end User need to Enable Repositories on the software center First.
In that way,the update to his Drivers Board...etc.will be provide to him in the update.
You can think about it more like - You ask = you get..
part of security to your system process ,and allow Repositories provide update/test update...
Just to add more understanding about how things work on fedora system.

Re: Fedora 29-30 upgrade - no second screen at boot each time

Do you have in the software center the Repositories of "vendor Firmware service "+ vendor update testing Enable?
IF the Answer is Yes then run this command as ROOT User in the terminal:

    Code:
    sudo dnf install \*-firmware

"Linux Vendor Firmware testing" is enabled.
I don't see any "Vendor update testing" option.

I do not really like running commands that I am unsure off - what exactly does installing \*-firmware do please?

    Thanks

    Hello johnsd.

That will add to the vendor non-free Firmware for your hardware.
as you know that Fedora do not ship non-free/support them.
Now AMD/Intel are on the same Group with the Drivers update - Vulcan Drivers.
so when you run this command then it will get the Firmware that you need and will get the update for you.
I Think I saw that Answer Before, but this is up to you to solve you issue,
and yes you will need to answer with (Y) to get keys/repo's.

So I installed from the repository "NVIDIA Linux Graphics Driver" and rebooted - this resulted in no login screen but the main screen obviously working. So I pushed <ENTER> to accept my invisible login name and entered my password blind. I now have the second screen up and running without having to visit the display settings each time - BUT no login screen.

So I uninstalled the NVIDIA Linux Graphics Driver and rebooted - still no login screen but the second screen comes live after login.

I use this PC for up to 2 hours each evening on two jobs I do - so am reluctant to do anything else that might end up with a re-install required. Fiddling with video drivers can be a nightmare when unpredictable things happen.

Does anyone know how I might recover my login screen without risk?

    Regards
    John

I have just spotted the reason for this - the login screen has moved to the secondary display - the one that is not active until the login has completed. The screen that is now has the login request is not the primary display. Weird.

    Hello johnsd.

OK...that issue I saw on installation on Other machine.
you can configure it with right click on the Desktop and if I remember right there was option of screen.
so on the top left of that window when you click it you can configure the right screen to view.
when you click who will be the main and Apply it will stay the main.
That happens when you connected to HDMI Cable same issue.

Thanks - no option there except the normal displays screen which does not seem to offer any option for the login screen. I thought rebooting with the second screen turned off might revert the login window to the primary screen but no luck.

    Hello johnsd.

here is one more thinking from my end part.
let's try to use lightDM and not GDM.
so run those 2 commands as ROOT,then when you done reboot the system.

    Code:
    systemctl disable gdm
    Code:
    systemctl enable lightdm
    and please post back.
