    First up, we will need to know what desktop you are using: Gnome, KDE, something else?

    Once upon a time the X root window was visible, and programs could do things to it.
    However, the modern desktop environments now display their own window, so you have to interact with them to get it to do stuff.

    For Gnome the gsettings program might be able to be used to set the wall paper. A script could then use that to display images, such as ones with the day of the week.

    User error. Please replace user and try again

    Re: Is there any software which shows day of the week in big font on wallpaper?

    Sorry. I don't have KDE installed on this machine so I will hand over to someone else for ideas on changing the wallpaper from a command line.
    [I might have KDE in a few weeks if you can wait.]

    I did find the following, but I have no idea if it works:
    Code:
    qdbus org.kde.plasmashell /PlasmaShell org.kde.PlasmaShell.evaluateScript '
        var allDesktops = desktops();
        print (allDesktops);
        for (i=0;i<allDesktops.length;i++) {{
            d = allDesktops[i];
            d.wallpaperPlugin = "org.kde.image";
            d.currentConfigGroup = Array("Wallpaper",
                                         "org.kde.image",
                                         "General");
            d.writeConfig("Image", "file:///path/to/imagefile")
        }}
    '
    Since the image data is not dynamic you could just use Gimp (or similar) to create 7 wallpaper files called "Sunday.jpg", etc.
    The date command could then be used to generate the file name to use to display the image:
    Code:
    day=$(date +%A)
    file=directory-name/$day.jpg

    User error. Please replace user and try again

    Conkey is available, but needs integration. It does some of what you want to have.
