F29 to F30 upgrade boots to grub prompt

I upgraded a F29 machine running as a VirtualBox guest to F30 last night. After I ran "dnf system-upgrade reboot" it installed all of them and then rebooted. It reboots to a plain grub text prompt. Now what?

I tried a few commands. The results make me think perhaps the partition type has been changed. That seems odd. The upgrade installer should never change a partition type.

The window won't let me capture text, so I have a screen shot.

    Now what?

Re: F29 to F30 upgrade boots to grub prompt

Is this a virtual machine you have had for a while that has gone through a few Fedora OS upgrades ?.
There is a post in the forums already for that case https://forums.fedoraforum.org/showt...nfig-in-chroot

I had the same issue with multiple KVM virtual machines that have been upgraded over the years, this simplest fix, if you backed up your virtual disk image, is simply to restore the disk image, redo the upgrade steps, but prior to running "dnf system-upgrade reboot" run the command "grub2-install /dev/vda" assuming you use the MBR to boot instead of a disk partition and virtual box uses /dev/vdX for disk names.
That one grub2-install command resolved all my failed grub prompt after reboot install attempts.

If you did not take a backup of the virtual machine disk before the upgrade, the post mentioned above is worth a look.

Re: F29 to F30 upgrade boots to grub prompt

Thanks for the tip! That worked like a champ. The Fedora 30 upgrade is complete and the machine boots normally.

The hard drive is /dev/sda. The machine uses BIOS and MBR for booting. It has been upgraded through a dozen or more iterations of Fedora. I made, as usual, a snapshot of the machine just before running the upgrade process. Snapshoting is a big reason to use VirtualBox. :-)

    Many thanks - Bill Gee
