To UDev or Not to UDev?

    Hello all,

UDev guarantees persistent device names across reboots regardless of their order of discovery. I require UDev for use with Oracle shared disks for RAC. It seems though that in some VM environments it might be a good idea to use UDev for ALL my disks.

I had some instances in VSphere where I needed to use UDev for standard (non-shared) disks as they would once in a while be discovered out of order and bind to the wrong device path (example: /dev/sdc1).

My question: Is it best in todays Linux environments to always use UDev to ensure your disks are always bound to the correct device?

    EDIT
I have never had an issue with a device\drive skewing what it thought it was connected to until now (with VSphere). It does not apear to be caused by a VSphere bug thus my question if this is a common industry method now for all disks.

Thanks for your feedback on this,

    Michael

Re: To UDev or Not to UDev?

With no responses, should I interpret that as Udev is still not commonly used\required for disks in modern enterprise shops?

If it is not a best practice (yet), any harm in configuring all disks with UDev?

    Thanks.

Check out this Redhat link. What you are describing sounds like the the mechanism that tracks disks by UUID and label.
