    Acer Nitro AN515-42 and its boot problem

    When I first installed Fedora 29 on my Acer Nitro 5 laptop, it was not a happy machine. Eventually I was able to get it working after much head scratching.
    Via trial and error these kernel parameters seem to work:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="resume=UUID=5d1e3899-cc67-4b39-8e26-633f1ce044c9 rcu_nocbs=0-7 ivrs_ioapic[4]=00:14.0 ivrs_ioapic[5]=00:00.2 pti=off"
    If I launch the system with the default kernel parameters it gets stuck with CPU#2 Stuck for 23 seconds message.

    Things went OK until I decided to install Virtualbox. I used the Virtualbox from the virtualbox web site..
    That installer caused some major problems, and gdm would no longer display a login screen.
    So, from a command line I installed and enabled sddm display manager instead.

    That allowed me to boot. However it only works about 1/3 of the time. The other two times, I get a dark screen, no way to switch to anything, cannot be ssh'ed to, thus in essence the machine is dead. About every third time, the machine boots up fine and I get the display working.

    At shutdown, similar scenario -- the machine does not shut down. Dark screen, power still on.
    I hold the power button 5 seconds to turn it off.

    Any ideas what to do?

    I'll include lshw so you can see what the hardware is.

    I'd remove the installed virtualbox you obtained from their website and instead use it from rpmfusion repositories as the rpmfusion builds are compiled specifically to deal with fedora's foibles.

    Re: Acer Nitro AN515-42 and its boot problem

    Hello tkalfaoglu,

    How is your machine doing? I purchased the exact same model machine (I think): AMD Ryzen 5, dual graphics, dual storage (M.2+SATA) about a month ago.

    Unfortunately I had to send it back to Acer for warranty repair because on the very first day (granted, I was playing around with the BIOS trying to figure out how to boot from the second HDD and install Fedora) it stopped working altogether: not even Windows 10 from the M.2 drive! Not even the Acer logo! The screen stayed black with only the keyboard lights on, an external monitor did not help.

    Allegedly they replaced the motherboard and updated the BIOS, but since they BIOS kept the password I set on it, I am not sure what they did. However I read online (in many places) that some Acer machines (not only this precise model, other series and Intel based as well) had a problem with their BIOS, which had to be updated to avoid the screen-blackout.

    If Windows works in your machine I would suggest that you update the BIOS (latest version is 1.16) and maybe the problem gets solved. On the other hand it could be a "boot parameter issue": my Fedora 30 works with nomodeset noapic i8042.nopnp (the last one for the touchpad to work), which might no be the best fit since the battery lasts half the time it lasts on Windows. I will borrow your parameters to see if the performance improves.

    Thanks,
    Joe.

    Re: Acer Nitro AN515-42 and its boot problem

    Hi there.. many thanks for your reply.. I am currently very happy with the machine.. the new kernels and the new parameters I found really helped me..
    Currently I am using these:
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi=noirq pci=noacpi ivrs_ioapic[4]=00:14.0 ivrs_ioapic[5]=00:00.2 pti=off i8042.nopnp"

    and it works very well..
    Lovely notebook btw.. great graphics that run cool, fast, sharp screen... does everything I want -- real work and world of warcraft
