Thumbs down Fedora 29 on Mac Mini 2.1

    Hello,
I have a Mac Mini 2.1 with an Intel C2D T7400 and 2G of RAM and a BCM70015 decoder card, which does not have drivers installed at this moment. I currently have installed Fedora 28 XFCE 64bit on this machine, which runs very well. However, as the support is nearing to it's end, I would like to upgrade the OS to F29.

This Mac has a 32bit EFI, using 4.16.3-301 64bit kernel. I have had to disable kernel updating, because the Mac will not boot with the current kernel, to which dnf would like to upgrade, 4.20-??. Seems to end in a kernel panic or the kernel hanging on somewhere, the machine not responding to anything except hard shutoff. Nor it will boot a F29 installer with the 4.18 kernel. It will simply not even start loading the kernel after Grub2 menu. No output on screen except a solid cursor for a while until the machine reboots back to Grub.

The disk is a 120G SSD partitioned like so:
    /dev/sda1 FAT16 ESP -- it is empty
    /dev/sda2 hfs+ ESP -- mounted at /boot/efi
    /dev/sda3 ext4 -- mounted at /boot
    /dev/sda4 ext4 -- mounted at /home
    /dev/sda5 ext4 -- mounted at /
    /dev/sda6 -- swap

    - Is it possible to upgrade to F29 without upgrading the kernel?
    - And if so, is it safe to do so?
    - Is there something I can do to try to troubleshoot the boot problems with newer kernels?

    - Is it possible to upgrade to F29 without upgrading the kernel? No

    - Is there something I can do to try to troubleshoot the boot problems with newer kernels? Post the actual errors and we'll see but I doubt it unfortunately

Solution - switch to another OS offering XFCE with 4.14 or even 4.9 LTS kernels? 4.9 would give you the longest life for your Mac as it is supported the longest of all the LTS kernels upstream. You may need to use a network installer to achieve this though so do you have a LAN port that is not controlled by a broadcom chip?

Re: Fedora 29 on Mac Mini 2.1

I wonder, I did dnf system-upgrade from F28 to F29, after trying it twice before, knowing that F29 installer refuses to boot.
Booted right up with the 4.20.14-200.fc29.x86_64 kernel. Once. After trying to boot again, no luck, monitor turns off after grub2 menu. Realized what the problem is though:
Grub2-mkconfig apparently does not point the right efi partition. The image I have attached has the boot entry in grub editor, showing "--hint-efi=hd0,gpt3" while the real efi partition is hd0,gpt2.

The kernel therefore has no problems booting on this machine.

I would certainly like to fix this permanently, how can I achieve that?

The reason I like to use Fedora on this machine is that it automatically does this procesess on a mac during install: https://heeris.id.au/2014/ubuntu-plu...pure-efi-boot/
